I was at a meeting once when my old company was purchased by a company out of Boston. On one side of the table was a guy who went to MIT on the other a Stanford guy. They both sat there contributing nothing but each was kind of fondling his school ring at each other almost like a challenge.

The title of the threads tells it all: we know what "intellectual" is but Jonathan wraps up what "smart" is. "An intellectual is someone who lives part-time in the world of ideas and stories. The smartest guy in the bar is one who gets his drinks for free.
What it boils down to is the relationship between conceptual intelligence and practical intelligence. Conceptual intelligence is the ability to juggle seven balls when others juggle three (a degree or a PHD may be an indication but certainly not a guaranty) meaning that the perceptive quality to find what balls exist, where and when, and assemble them in a consistent way. Being smart is how you vary the juggling in practice to make it a better life for everyone, yourself included. Smart is the guy who enjoys the journey even before getting the drink. There is no opposition between the two but it's a rare reunion: I'd vote for Pete Biro, Bill Palmer, and Whit Haydn, tie for gold medal. A silver medal for Darwin Ortiz, Bob Sheets. A gold medal in "smart" for Jonathan Townsend and Mickey Silver. Many Gold medal in "smart" and Bronze medals in combined talents for others like Michael Gallo, Michael Rubinstein, Alan Wheeler, the Godfather Vinny Marini, ... Check their posts if you care for becoming intellectual AND smart. The only high probability thing is that being judgemental (and negatively even moreso) can neither be intelligent nor smart.

I forgot Tommy but he is blowing up both categories: so just a very special price for him.
Father Photius also deserves some honors and ... it's painful to realize that we are forgetting some others who also have merits which can be shared smartly. Let's get drunk!
