I am making a close up table for my practice area and I have looked around the board and talked to a few places that make custom sized mats but decided that the best way to get the job done will be for me to make my own mat to save on costs.
Where can I find large sheets of rubber/neoprene? I have the rest of what I need!

Are you guys holding out on me? I know that somebody must have made their own mats with some padding...

LWolf76, where in Wisconsin are you from? I'm in Milwaukee. What kind of foam rubber do you need? I think there is a place that sells foam rubber here. Don,

There is a flat shipping "foam" sheeting that can be cut to any size or pieced together for a larger area (not my choice). It comes on a roll, should be bigger than you need for a one piece application.
Check out places that deal with shipping/mailing etc. Hint: Mailing tubes of various sizes can be fun to experiment with. Bryan

Well, I have also found
http://www.workout-mat.com/ I haven't tried this but I am going to go to a sporting goods store this weekend and see if I can find them! They sound like just what I am looking for. If anyone has tried them please let me know how it worked out.

Also look at the foam things you put under sleeping bags in the camping supplies. I've used some of this and it works pretty well. Cheap, too.

I was told that some of the close up mats are made of scuba diving suit material. Not sure what it is called or where you could find it, but it might be what you are looking for.

Wet suits / scuba diving suits are made from neoprene rubber.

That's an idea. I don't think that I am going to cut up my $300 wet suit for a $120 mat, but I wonder if I can talk to the local dive shop and see if they have old wet suits that they will sell cheap?
Thanks!

I was not suggesting that, I know how cold the waters can be in Wisconsin. Even if they don't have old suits thay should know of a place you can get it from.
Hope this helps

I've only ever covered with fabric not rubber mat. Last table I made—a street performing table—was covered with auto upholstery which was stretched taut over 1/4 inch foam. This used 1/4 inch plywood top.

I make my own close up mat table tops from tartan fabric stretched over a board and stapled on the back. For the padding I use old towels. I got the idea from Jim Cellini. It works fine for me and fits my theme- it is also cheap, I mean inexpensive, to make.

Try an army surplus store. I found five yards of wetsuit material for only $5.
A quick web search reveals that http://www.ahh.biz/products/neoprene%20w......W005.htm Bye for now Harold

When I made my tables, I found a blue material at the hardware store that comes in rolls, that is perfect. It is called underlayment. It is used on a floor under hardwood floors. It is 5/16" thick and has the perfect "give". I paid $4 per foot. It comes on a 6 foot wide roll. This has lasted for years and since it is intended to be under a floor for 20 + years, I don't think I'm going to wear it out any time soon. Check it out.

Carpet padding ...
Shelf liner ... Anti-fatigue mats for standing upon ... Carpet samples ... Spongy bath mats ... Toweling ... Typewriter pads (remember typewriters?) ... So many ways to go. It sorta depends on what kind of surface feel you want. Sid
