While practicing with my friend and magic mentor, I learned that I have a knack for coin and rope magic. I was wondering if anybody has any resources that I can get a hold of that may help me.

By resources I assume you mean books. I would suggest Bobo's Modern Coin Magic or Roth's Expert Coin Magic.

If you are a visual learner, then you may choose David Roth's "Expert Coin Magic Made Easy vol. 1-3" or David Stone's "Basic Coin Magic vol. 1-2". Excellent resource for coin magic!

Michael Ammar's Introduction to Coin Magic DVD works well with Bobo's book to provide a solid foundation for coin work.
I don't know much about rope magic. |

If you have a mentor why can`t he help you ?
The coin basics are covered in a number of sites, but ropes are less well covered. Pro. Nightmare, some form of cut and restored, Tabarys videos are the best, followed by Salveno`s. At least in my opinion. Eddie |

Well, the problem with my teaching Nathan coin and rope magic is that I am more into other types of magic. I don't know too many coin and rope tricks, but I realized right off the bat that he can excel in this area.

For rope effects you might try "Abbott's encyclopedia of rope tricks" by Stewart James.

Dragona,
For ropes, the Abbott's encyclopedia is good because it details lots of moves and will give you many methods for cut and restored, knot, and ring & rope effects. I think the book's greatest use is as a resource for when you are putting together your own routine or looking for a specific move. A good place to start might be with the Professor's Nightmare manuscript which is readily available, cheap and a classic effect. For longer multi-phase routines I would suggest Aldo Colombini's Mama Mia rope routine or George Sands Sandsational routine. Again a lot of great rope magic for a price that cannot be beat. H&R books has the Sands material. Finally, if you prefer video I would check out Daryl's material. He has a number of DVD's out on rope magic and these would be the best place to start. |

Where is the best place to find these materials?

If you don't have Bobo's Modern Coin Magic, run -- don't walk -- to your nearest magic shop and get it.
Or you may be able to find the soft-cover Dover edition in most larger bookstores (and it's cheaper). If it's not in stock, they can get if for you. |

So, I got ahold of Bobo's Modern Coin Magic. I have been to the magic shop in my area and I can't find anything on rope magic. Where else can I get the videos or DVDs?

Daryl, Aldo Colombini, Flip, and others have videos on rope magic. You should be able to find a Dover version of Abbott's Encyclopedia of Rope Magic fairly easily (or you may want to contact Abbott's Magic in Colon, MI to find out if they still have all three volumes available--I believe the Dover book is just the first volume).

Thank's Paul, I think I'll go to the magic shop and see if they can order it for me.

Dragona,
If you are anywhere near public transport, get into NYC and Tannen's. They have a great catalog and do mail order. It's really about the people you can meet there. learning to use a search engine/ebay/forums is good for some things. Maybe not the best way to start out. IMHO Regards, Jonathan

What is the address to Tannen's? I do drive and can get there easily, so if I can get the address and a few bucks, I'd be more than happy to check it out. By the way, what does IHMO mean?

If you are into coins, check out Dan's site. http://www.coinvanish.com
It and Coinpurse are the two best coin sites I've seen. He, Curtis Kam, Reed McClintock, and Dave Neighbors are all frequent posters on this site. They are all great about helping new coin magicians out. Scott

I have gotten a lot of help from Dave Neighbors, especially during his time as our special Guest. Right now I am taking care of a sprained (maybe broken wrist) and have been trying to compensate with the other hand. So after much practice I hope that it will be that much easier when my wrist heals so I can start doing performances.

I've gotten a hold of the book for Nathan. I'm not a coin worker, I just do basic things. So how do help him out? I know I can watch him, correct anything he's having problems with. Can you help push us in the right direction?
