That was the kind of magic that DC built his foundation on. Well directed, clean and simple effects.

I taped that special years ago, and I always loved that coin vanish. I suspect a P..l but to me it always looked very magical in his hands.
But the Chinese guy looking for coins in the oranges was obviously scripted. Still, it brings back memories

I have every one of all the 17 tv specials on dvd, and the first few are AMAZINGLY dated, the jokes are bad, the hair is worse, the clothes are sickening... but I still love to watch them.
I never tell my gran where the Statue of Liberty went
I come from the future to culture you poor sods with fire.

Alright, just remember, all of you making fun of the clothes and hair styles will also be made fun of after a number of years in the future when people are watching your videos or looking at your pictures. In the days that those were made, it was the in style. In fact with Copperfield, it was the (I guess you could call it) Super In Style. All these magicians wanting to copy your dress style, your effects, etc, etc. We all think we're in style right now, but just wait.

Enjoyed that clip a lot. Every one remembers the walk throw the great wall of chine, vanishing the statue of liberty and all the flying around. But its these little bits I love.
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

Gah, me either! Not like it's even available anywhere
Oh well, it's funny b/c I probably saw that as a kid. I certainly saw DC when he came near to my little neck of the woods. My audition for my local IBM ring included an original routine I worked up using the Wow gimmick, some cards and a miniature stage and weird card holder. It was "If Paul Harris did a David Copperfield Trick" and it was an homage to the 2 guys who had the biggest influence on my magic growing up. Funny that Harris also had a big hand in creating Blaine's "urban shaman" character.

Even when I was a little kid, I thought Copperfield's magic was really corny, cheesy, and fake. When the TV anchor said there were no camera tricks used to make the Statue of Liberty disappear I thought she was lying.
After seeing special effects in movies like Star Wars, Copperfield's effects seemed like small fry. And his pathetic attempt to build tension and suspense as he was about to be cut in half by a whirling saw? I already saw that done far better with a laser in some James Bond movie (though Bond escapes before he's cut in half). Hollywood ruined Copperfield for me. Maybe I would have been more impressed had I been in the audience and seen his effects performed in front of my very eyes instead of on TV. Now as an adult the only thing that impresses me about Copperfield is his ability to make money. |
