My concern is with the misinformation about James being spouted. What evidence do you have that James saw Apollo's lecture? None whatsoever! You can't have, he wasn't there. |

James does have a nice routine which comprises magic/hypnosis to pick pocket.
Essentially, he uses a hypnotic technique to turn the person into a statue (whilst awake) as misdirection for all the steals. He did this recently in Southport Magic Convention (UK). Greg Wilson thought it was incredible. |

Wow, if Greg thoughts it was incredible, so it must be good
Was it the interested to do pickpocket if the personn is in pseudo trance ? What's the challenge ? Better if you kill you spectator, then you pickpocket, it's similar to trance except you can keep his wallet and mobile.

I don't think so.
I'm sorry if I'm not a Brown's fan. I'm too old for that, lol I just point something looks obviouly for me. What's the point to pickpocket somebody if he's in pseudo trance ?!

Alright Parmenion,
Its one thing to defend your postion, but its another when you use digs against the person themselves. Zerububle, Greg did not get permission to put the routine on the video On The Spot. Greg said he learned the idea from Apollo. He gave him credit. Big Difference. I would like to see James' routine with the psuedo hypnosis, but unless its on video or on youtube, I'm sure I'll only hear about it. I may not be a big fan of James, but like Teller with his collection of magic books, you have to get as much information on the subject as possible. |

Hi James H
This is where it all gets messy. Greg states (and I asked him personally) that Apollo did give him permission and then after release said that he had not. One of them is lying... there is just no way of knowing who! I will ask James is he can film the hypnosis/pickpocket routine and get it posted on you tube asap. I am sure he will be happy to do this. As I have stated a few times before. My issue here is that people are stating opinion and hearsay as fact. Whatever people think here are two very important facts. 1) James HAS NOT RELEASED the coin on shoulder. 2) James NEVER had any rights over the original material anyway! This forum was about magic & pick pocketing. When James began to get abuse for something that happened years ago AND WAS NEVER CONCLUSIVE (even if some people made up their own minds with little evidence) I felt it only fair to balance the arguments. I hope this thread can get back on track as I believe others may have some great ideas on how to integrate magic with pick pocketing. Bubble |

All I can say about Greg is that he has published material that was not his own more than once. (Pyrotechnic paste boards anyone?)
"Whatever people think here are two very important facts. 1) James HAS NOT RELEASED the coin on shoulder. 2) James NEVER had any rights over the original material anyway!" I apologize to take this topic off track once again, but what exactly are you trying to say here? If these two statements are facts. Then the first one is way off, as James did release the routine from his website. ( I know, I have a friend who owns a copy) It isn't on his website now, but it was up there. You can't erase history that easily. If James didn't have any rights over the original material, then why did he release it? Just curious. Now back on track. If you would like some sources on magic with pickpocketing, then I highly recommend Absolute Magic by Derren Brown, as he uses pickpocketing to achieve some amazing feats of mind reading and magic. Ricky Dunn's book is excellent for using magic with your routines. I believe there is a lengthy chapter in his book about the subject. I could mention the dozen of so ideas with magic and pickpocketing that Ricky Dunn had, but I think everyone on here should own that book. (In the pickpocketing section, not the whole forum) |

James released his one coin routine but did not ever release the coin on shoulder.
Pot of jam was never available. Still fancy a pot of jam did not have the coin on shoulder on either. Therefore my point is accurate. James never released the coin on shoulder. I agree with all JH's suggestions. Ricky Dunns material is worth its worth in gold! Bubble |

Did you in fact learn the coin routine without the coin on shoulder in it? As he only has two dvds he has ever sold. One is Still Fancy a Pot of Jam? Which does not have the routine on at all and his lecture dvd which has the one coin routine without the coin on shoulder. Therefore I would be amazed that you have a dvd from James including coin on shoulder... As there isn't one.

Last comment on thesubject then back on track.
I have seen James Brown's lecture video where he teaches it. He did sell it off his website. Part of the advertisment was the coin on shoulder that he was stopped from being released on Still fancy a pot of Jam. Ask James Brown if its true. |

James is a very good magician but for me he's a no class.
He's like a cow in the porcelain shop. It's my opinion when I watch him perform. The worse was his 1mn pickpocket challenge on TV. The "spectator" was in this case a confederate and the steals were horrible.

Listen guys, what's the point in arguing?
fair enough if you WANT to bicker, but let me ask you this? What are you trying to acchieve? it kinda looks like there are two sides to this: 1-people attacking James Brown. 2-a couple of people defending him. I'm really not sure what you are trying to get out of this. I'd be very interested to know to be honest. Zerububle-I don't know who you are and I've never heard of you before but you seem to be very well educated. I take it you know James? |

Some of these posts are just stupid. He doesn't ever teach coin on shoulder on Pot of Jam! I agree with Zerububle
Hope this is all sorted out now. |

Here we go again.
James mixing up hypnosis and pickpocketing is something very special to see. Hugely entertaining. And wasn't the coin on shoulder in 'Bobo' in 1842 Anthony

Was anybody else confused by the topic heading "Pickpocketing to support magic"? Part of me wondered if the poster was implying that he picks people's pockets for real to financially support his hobby!

The discussion has nothing to do with Fancy a pot of Jam, or Still fancy a pot of Jam. (The first not being relesased, the second was) It is about his lecture dvd that James did sell on his website. Not only did it teach the coin on shoulder, but it used the controversy to sell it (some of the ad said "learn the trick that was taken off his first video") The routine (coin on shoulder) isn't the problem. Its what is taught in it. Until many people figure that out, this arguement is going to go in some circles. |

The coin routine on his lecture notes does not have coin on shoulder. The ad copy was changed BEFORE the dvd went on sale. James acknowleged the wording was a mistake.
He has NOT released coin on shoulder. There is no problem with the rest of the routine. The only problem was with the idea that it was the 'routine that was banned'. This is not the case anymore. Why are people still harping on about something that didn't even happen. |
