Have you ever downloaded an MP3? Listened to a music video which was uploaded by an unauthorized source on youtube [i.e. not the label or artist]? Because your moral outrage seems misplaced if it only exists when it affects your craft. Did you laugh at Metallica when they came out against file sharing but spout a tirade when something by a magician is uploaded or exposed on youtube? Is it not the same because an MP3 represents less "value" than a vaunted magic trick?

That's some fighting words right there! GUT PUNCH!!
you'll get some on here that will rip you to pieces probably very shortly! I wish you well! P.S. You still have a good point concerning 'certain' people, but not everybody. P.S.S. How do you have over 140 posts in just 4 days? Laid off from your job? Just curious

I think music videos are a different sort of thing. They promote a band or song so that can make a consumer buy the album or DVD to get more.
The magic market is much smaller then the music or film market. It always amazed me back in the day of cassette recorders how the big companies would bring out a double cassette recorder so as to make bootlegging easier!!

Lunatik I was agreeing with your P.S.S. If you look into any of Whokebe's posts they are 4 word comments that do not add anything to a thread. That is how he acquired 140 posts in 4 days.

I don't think you do. Why do the corporations bring out gadgets that help piracy?
Perhaps because they are not that concerned for the artists. Stealing is wrong. Watching a promo clip is not.

Try to keep up with what is being said. Size was being used as a justification for stealing. |

Nobody ever learned how to play guitar from listening to an MP3. At least not someone who had never held a guitar in their life. And before you say it, I am a former bass guitar player and am all to familiar with people who can learn to play by ear. I am not talking about those people. I am talking about some 14 year old kid who has never touched an instrument in his life.

No no, I think he makes a great point. Stealing from someone who has created nothing, rather subjugated artists into something not unlike slavery, while gerrymandering the value of the product using hype and flash is exactly like using a published work on a subject that can actually lead to an income, and whose sale benefits no one more than the original creator. Come on people, why can't you see that?
I bet you thought no one had ever considered this line of thought, didn't you. That's so cute. |

Although I agree partially, you have to be aware of two essential points that makes the magic community different from, for example, the music industry.
1. If you copy an MP3, this will not make it possible for you to go around and perform the song and earn money with it. (Most musicians make the largest part of their income by performing, not by selling records; even if listening to illegal music, people will still have to pay for the concert). In magic, often seeing a DVD once will allow a trained magician to go out and perform the effect. So not only will you prevent the seller of the DVD from making money, but you will also create unfair competition compared to people who actually pay for their effects. So in the discussion about exposing magic, it not only about the direct loss of money, like in the music industry, but also about the indirect loss of income the exposure causes. 2. Even if you would go around and perform the song for money, this would be illegal in its own right: record companies would come track you down to pay royalties. Such a thing does not exist in the magic community. Mind you that I'm not saying that this proves that exposing magic is worse than illegal downloading of mp3s. What I'm saying is that your analogy is crooked and therefore you don't show that "their moral outrage" is "misplaced". |

So stealing is OK as long as the person makes additional income in other ways.

Lol. This is why I laugh my arse off when some magician complains about exposure and piracy but then tries to justify stealing in one context versus stealing in another.
It's easy to take the high road when it's something that implicates your craft or affects your commercial interests. |

I'm just pointing out that there are some important differences which make the analogy somewhat crooked. Furthermore, I really don't see how you get "stealing is OK" from "I partially agree" and "I'm not saying that this proves that exposing magic is worse than illegal downloading of mp3s." |
