Yes, I'm looking to recreate the effect. I'm a good enough actor, I can "sell" the situation and pick my time. I'm looking for ways to recreate the effect. Here's the deal though, I'd prefer to not have to use an assistant. Not so sure the IT gives the look I'm looking for. Maybe if done perfectly, but IT always seems to me to look like something on a hidden string. Maybe that's just me. It's been a while since I've used IT. Maybe IT has gotten better.

Okay, just got Polter. I can say, I don't see how this works AT ALL. It's based on the earplugs principle as discussed above. Essentially, it's IT and earplugs. But when the thing goes, you have a coin, IT, and earplugs left to ditch. No way to do it across the room. And you have to walk over and get the coin going as a counterweight too. So not only are you not left clean, you're suspicious as hell. You might as well have a guy hiding behind a curtain yanking IT.
Grrrrrrr. Waste of money. Still accepting ideas. |

I don't mean to sound rude... but I've been trying for an hour to come up with a way of saying this, and I just can't think of a kind way to say it...
Two Things: 1. You've been doing magic for 16 years and can't think of a way to recreate this effect? 2. You've been doing magic for 16 years and can't think of a way to set-up/clean-up with the system you just bought? Also, please don't purchase an effect and then describe it's workings line by line. This is a public forum. I have two questions so that I might try to help. Was the can opened, full, somewhat empty, or totally empty? The girl who did this... was it HER house that the gathering was at? (The first question is more important than the second.)

Okay Jeff
I'm gonna take it that perhaps it's a semantics issue and you're not being a jerk with the 'you've been doing magic for 16 years and can't think of a way to recreate this effect' line. So let me rephase it: "I am trying to recreate the effect of the 'telekinetic soda can' in the exact manner and under the exact circumstances that my girlfriend and her friend first saw it executed. While there are several ways to accomplish a shaking coke can, I have yet to find one that works under the very difficult circumstances and environment that it was originally presented in." As to your second question - cleanup is a !@#$%. I'll re-tell the story with more info and hopefully you can get the logistics that I may have left out. But before I do, I didn't describe ANYTHING line by line. I gave a quick review of the product. And if you look in this thread, and others, I didn't say anything that hasn't already been tipped or hinted at in other threads. keywords like 'IT, plugs, or counterweight' doesn't mean jack to an outsider (who probably wouldn't be reading this deep into the threads on a lark) without prior knowledge or magical background. Ya dig? Alright: back to the story Girls are playing light as a feather, stiff as a board, all that. They've been having a slumber party. There are soda cans, etc. strewn about as a result of the party. They go to their sleeping bags to go to sleep. They get inside their sleeping bags. The girls are talking about how light as a feather/stiff as a board is a trick and that stuff isn't real. The girl in question, we'll call her Ms. B, says "some of it is". The other girls argue for a bit, and she says "I can move stuff". Clarifies with her mind. She says "You see that Dr. Pepper can over there?" The Dr. Pepper can is on a fireplace hearth, the low kind that you sit on. Raised a few feet off the floor. Ms. B is bundled in her sleeping bag on the floor about five feet away. She says "watch". The other girls are giving her a bad time. She shushes them and then concentrates on the can. She's not moving her arms, or any part of her body. Just staring at the can. It takes two minutes. Finally the can shakes side to side a little bit. The can only had a little liquid in it. Most of the girls are freaked out, they basically cover themselves in the sleeping bag and say "That's weird. I'm going to bed." Ms B. smiles smugly. One girl goes to check the can. It's clean. She's instantly afraid. So the details are: Girl is under scrutiny and active with the other kids the rest of the night. Hard to 'fix a can' when you're doing group activities. Can wasn't hers. She was drinking an orange drink. She's five feet away from the can during the effect. She's also surrounded and there's girls that are closer to the can than she is spread out around the floor. There's no chance for cleanup because the can is instantly examined by another girl. No suspicious movement from girl. Girl was not a stooge. She's one of the ones telling the story. (I realize a helper on this effect would be the easiest way, but it's not an option in the re-creation.) So there you go. Do what you will with it. It's the perplexing puzzle I'm presently pondering. |

And this recounting of the story is after how many years? I'm not trying to be a jerk here but stories like this have a way of becoming more impressive over the years. Just look at the Gospels in the Bible. Just kidding, that was inappropriate.
Even so, the effect, EXACTLY as you have described it is still very possible.

Bill, thank you Good tip.
Jeff, as far as the gospel accounts and the veracity goes, there's actually a surprising amount of evidence that the docs haven't changed that much over the year. At least not 98% of the text. But that's not what we're talking about here. Yes. The time period between the story and today is 16 years. The thing is, I got the exact same story from two people that weren't there at the same time telling it. Exactly the same. Little extra info from the second girl. I would imagine seeing something like that under those circumstances burns an imprint into your mind a little bit. So here we go, I hereby throw myself on the mercy of the court. And with no sarcasm at all intended, I will say "If you've come up with a way to pull this off with the angles and situation described that you think will work", I give you major props. Because this one's causing a brain cramp. Maybe it's just because I'm close to people in the situation and figure they will be more critical/aware than a 'normal' audience. Jeff, I'd love to hear your ideas. PM me if you don't want to discuss it here. And on an unrelated note, are you excited about the re-release of 'Ten' with the extra tracks? |

Haha love the Pearl Jam reference. I saw them a few years back in Cleveland. It was by far the best concert I've ever been to. They played for 3 and a half hours!
As far as your puzzle. Take this into account: Before the "odd" girl says that she can "move things" the girls aren't suspecting anything. They have no reason to be suspicious of her or watching her closely for any reason. Because of this, as they are all getting prepared for bedtime, there is plenty of opportunity for the "odd" girl to set up whatever she wants. A small time delay and she's ready to act. IT does not have to be fixed to the object that one wants to set into motion. No cleanup would be necessary in that case. Most pre-teen girls play light as a feather stiff as a board. If this girl's dad was a magician, she could have said "Dad, I'm going to this sleepover... how can I be popular??" Etc.. etc..

So I'm sitting here tired as hell at 1:54 in the morning, but got the email that somebody responded so I had to check it out. Man am I stupid. How could I have missed that? Cause I'm imagining a specific situation and my mind has frozen the pic as I've seen it in my mind.
Let me see if I'm on the same wavelength you are, Jeff. She sets up the IT under the object? Therefore, when she does her thing, she makes the object move, but anybody examining the object sees the object as clean? |

Under it might work, not exactly what I had in mind. Keep thinking, you're getting warmer.

Also, if the girl really did wait a full two minutes before making anything happen, she was a performance genius, incredibly mature for her age. Most middle school kids, in the excitement of being about to "wow" their friends, would not have the presence of mind to really "sell" it like that. This story alone, regardless of the method, could be a lesson for many of us! It's made me consider completely relinquishing all magic except for my IT reel, always under my collar, just waiting for moments where I can tell people that I can "move things." Not really, but still... great story, great thread. (No pun intended)

LOL
Yeah, you're right about the performance genius stuff and picking your spots. She really did wait the full two minutes. In fact, the first time I had it described, I had it like 5-10 minutes. The other girl said, nah... probably more like two minutes. It just FELT like 5-10 minutes under those circumstances. So I'll admit to not being much of an IT guy. So Jeff, maybe help me out. Because what I'm looking for is that 'shaking side to side' thing. I had my hopes up for 'shudder' (because that name sounds like what the can did. But the video is not. They should've called it 'slider' which I can accomplish with M5s and the like) So under I thought could give it that little shake. It can't be attached to the can, obviously, because the can is clean. You're saying it's not 'under'. You can't loop it through the pull tab because it's not clean. That leaves the only thing I can think of being attached to something on the other side, stretch the IT out making it taut, and catching it on the lip of the can to vibrate it. I guess in my mind that just makes things a little too iffy. Maybe hard to do it smoothly like a 'mental tremor'. Last plea for ideas.... |

I hadn't thought of the side to side thing. I thought you just wanted it to move slightly. I'm off to practice. Really though, discussion of methods should be reserved for inner thoughts. I'll PM you when I get a workable solution that I think fits what you are looking for. IT might not be the "best" solution. I'll go into R&D mode and get back to you.

Okay. I feel really dumb. I scrolled down, clicked on "Buffet" but I can't find inner thoughts. Do I need to do something special?

Just a suggestion, is there any possible ways that you can contact this girl. ask some of her old friends, old school records, yearbook or telepathy. if, most probably her father is a magi, wouldn't it be nice to jam with them

I cannot believe this thread has lasted as long as it has. Via a PM, I offered my thoughts a while back, several of which have resurfaced openly bu others. In truth the under the can approach was one ot them. Ed Solomon, Larry White and I brainstormed a specialixed device. In reality, it would duplicate the movement as stipulated. Unfortunately I cannot divulge the working mechanism. As was typical of Larry White, he made samples of the prototype devised from the three way brainstorming process and input; then sent one to each contributor. Maybe one day this underground apparatus will surface.
