I don't know about any of you guys but I get a little disappointed with magic shops that, on their web site, they often expose effects (like the TT for one example).
I also get upset when magic sites post videos on 'youtube' that allows anybody easy access to view certain tricks. Now, the method may not be exposed but everybody can see the effect and even though the chances of anybody in your audience actually having seen these videos is slim at best, the fact that it's still there bothers me. Simple searches can lead one there. Finally, the clear bags that magic magazines/magic catalogues come in. It allows people (post office workers) to get glimpses of things including web site addresses where they can check things out. Occasionaly these things come opened or partially opened but enough where one can fold it in a certain way to take it out of the small opening and then read it before putting it back in the plastic. I have a PO Box and this doesn't help the matter. Although most people are just curious, when they can see through the plastic and know it's a magic magazine/catalogue, it seems some go through it for whatever reason such as to perhaps see 'revealed' tricks which are sometimes revealed/taught. I know these clear plastic coverings are probably cheaper than a regular brown envelope, but one of our jobs as magicians is the meaning of the word 'secret' and I'm finding these magic shops often lack this very important aspect of the word 'secret.' Does anybody else agree with any of this rambling? |

I thought this was a topic about magic shops ...
But it appears to actually be a complaint about magic websites and concerns that postal workers are secretly learning about magic by 'glimpsing' at web addresses and then going to the magic websites and learning all the secrets. Also concerns that plastic coverings are insufficiently protecting magic-themed magazines from curious people (presumably postal workers) who want to learn about magic secrets ... " Does anybody else agree with any of this rambling? " Not really ... I demonstrate magic at a 'real' magic store and we don't expose secrets - we sell them. That's right, anyone who comes in, has the money and wants to buy the secret to a magic trick, can. (Even postal workers). Oh, don't get me wrong, I know what your trying to say, (I think). I just don't believe it's productive to worry about it. Nothing is going to change. Just do 'your' magic the best you can and if you want to buy a secret - come see me ! Cap'n Mike ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Rodney,
We have folks here who dive into "the latest" before even studying the Tarbell set and spend decades fussing over sleights they can't use effectively for want of basic presentation skills. Whether venal interests make porn of the base "how to" of our craft or not - it's still a performing art and its up to all of us to make it work for audiences.

Thanks for your 2 responses above.
I haven't actually had any problems with anything yet (except for some of the 'postal' stuff I mentioned) and I just performed a show last night and have already been asked back next year. Normally I keep quiet on issues like this (my history here will show this) but since I just very recently had one of my catalogues arrive in the mail 'opened,' my mood was one of venting. Sorry 'bout that! |
