I bought a Flip camera on Friday and made my first youtube posting with it yesterday, so don't expect great video quality, but those of you who collect coin flourishes may find it of interest. My mentor, the late Fredo Raxon (1923-2008) showed this move to me in 1970. It is by far the easiest coin rolldown I have ever seen, and can even be done with small coins (dimes!), should one have reason to. I have not seen anyone else do it, nor have I found it in print prior to my own publication of it in a German Magazine (Magische Welt) and, more recently, in M-U-M. Here's the link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3XeJ-JbtF8 Raxon did not claim to me to have invented it, so I have named it simply to acknowledge him because he showed it to me. Does anyone know any provenance or prior sources?

Richard,
You've nicely demonstrated the Roll Down Flourish with Four Coins. It's described on p. 204 of Bobo's The New Modern Coin Magic and also on p. 139-140 in Tarbell Vol. 3. Tarbell mentions that it was a favorite of Manuel. Larry |

Larry, take another look. The Rolldowns described in Bobo and Tarbell are much more difficult than this one. The starting and ending points are the same, and to a lay audience, they would likely be regarded as the same thing. But Bobo and Tarbell both mention how difficult these are, whereas I'd guess many folks could master the Raxon version in an afternoon. While the video is not a tutorial, I tried to show it slowly enough and from a few different angles to make it possible for others to learn.
My personal favorite Rolldown is Buckley's method (pp. 66-67 of Principles and Deceptions), because it happens almost instanteously, but that one requires (according to Buckley, and my own experience!) hundreds of hours of practice. The Raxon achieves the same result, with much less effort.

You're right. You roll down the coins one at a time whereas the Bobo and Tarbell methods divide into two and then four coins. I tried your method with my Peace Dollars and it works fine. Thanks

It is easier with large thick coins with milled edges, such as the Peace Dollars, but can also be done with small thin coins with unmilled edges, which can be VERY difficult to do with other roll down techniques.

There seemed to be some confusion about what made the Raxon roll down different from the others in print, so I have posted a demonstration of the Arthur Buckley Roll Down from Principles and Deceptions (1948), which is my personal favorite, but is as difficult to do as the Raxon one is easy. At the end of the Buckley video is a brief clip of a five coin pirouette based on the Buckley technique. That's not yet part of my working repertoire! Here's the link, in case anyone is interested:

Dick, could you shoot the thing with the silk now, too? People are not going to believe that!

Hi Curtis! Yeah, that is pretty cool. Try it with a thin smooth paper napkin. Much easier, though not as classy looking. The problem with filming it is that I haven't figured out how to hold the flip camera in one hand and still pull out the handkerchief while keeping it framed. An interesting challenge. (Sure, I could ask the wife to help, but what fun would that be?).
Say, I have a technical question for you: Is Jose de la Torre's Roll Down, described in his Magicana of Havana in New York book, different from the Buckley Roll Down, (other than that he starts with the four coins palmed)? He seems to think so in the description, but I'm not convinced...

Hey Rich, get yourself a $5 mini-tripod and attach the flip to it (should screw on) and you don't have to bother your other hand or your wife.
Incidentally, I like the Raxon Rolldown better but you're real good doing it either way. -Mb

Richard,
Regarding the de la Torre rool-down, I appreciate your question and am interested in what the experts have to say. I never understood how it was different, but maybe I am missing the nuances or finesses that make it so. Perhaps the instructions in that work simply didn't define those differences clearly enough. Nice work on the YouTube demos! Does the Flip allow you to attach a tripod? That'd free up a hand.

That's what I'm talkin' `bout! Thanks for putting that up, that's a stunt most people never get to see.
About the De La Torre rolldown, sorry, you got me. I haven't read the description. I like the no-nonsense approach of the Raxon Rolldown, though. There's positive control over the coins throughout, so in circumstances where you're more concerned about silence or certainty than speed, such as under a hank, it might be the rollout of choice.
