The effect of the trick is this: the magician is seen on his motorcycle, he drives into a sort of box, the box is raised into the air, then the sides drop and the magician and the bike disappear and then instantly reappear at the back of the audience.

I don't know what this is called and I think I have seen Copperfield do it before somewhere, not sure though.

I am wondering the name, who builds it,and who owns the rights?

I am looking for someone to bulid one a little smaller as I want it to hold smaller that a motorbike, more around a dirt bike.

any help?

Actually it's an old illusion by David Devant. Check all the books on him, he also was a genius.

One set of plans is available from Paul Osborne.

Look for "Cycle Switch" on his website: http://www.osborneillusionsystems.com/

Doug Henning also used to do this illusion is his show.

Often, the vanish is done from a cargo net, much like a jumbo bengal net (as opposed to a box).

Thanks senor rai and donald! I could not find any books a david devant, is there a web site?

the osbourne plans, are they basically the same thing? I guess that would be an easier and cheaper way to do it.

LOL......I'm pretty sure David Devant has neither a website or a youtube account...perhaps I may be wrong...ask your mentor Kramien about Devant he may be able to assist you with his vast library....you know those underused dusty things called books...AC

The Illusions is called the Cargo Net! The price range is 9,000 dollars and up depending on the builder.... Bill Smith, William Kennedy, Owens Magic, John Gaughan, and EdfMagic. Just to name a few...
It normally takes two chain drive motors, which can cost up to two thousand each.
Some people use winches.... This Illusion is something that is very much not a practicle Illusion.....
I hope this will help.

Be advised that even as a "build-it-yourself" illusion it will need to be made with tremendous precision to operate consistently and reliably. And many different skill-sets are required to build it. While essentially simple in concept there are many, many details to this illusion.

And as mentioned above it does not troupe easily. It's a huge comitment to store it, move it, safely set it up and tear it down and pack it up.

A friend of mine has one that was built for him by Willie Kennedy, about 15 years ago, and at that time it cost about $11,000 not including the bike! It is a beautiful and reliable prop that has undergone two complete make-overs (that I am aware of) in that time. But it does take quite a few people to set it up, to perform it, etc.

I might suggest that you take a good look at the cargo Net/Dizzy Limit, as the vanish of a woman presented in this manner is a very impressive effect and is far, far more practical. I remember seeing Stan Kramien do this many years ago, and truthfully it plays very nearly as well as the cycle illusion.

Thank-you, I have seen stans tapes and remember he would use that as his lat illusion to his alice in wonderland act I believe.

the object for me is to make a Motor cross rider disappear and reappear at the back of the audience, of course I know it can only be done in a theatre and under strick conditions. would the cargo net/dizzy limits work with a bike?

Mike, the Bike vanish that DC did is essentially the Cargo Net/Dizzy Limit wrapped in a different skin....if you get what I mean...do a little research....customize the idea....bingo your illusion......AC

Adam-

Would that it were that easy! What you say is true, with the exception of the "bingo" declaration. Conceptually the same, mechanically, worlds apart, and again, not for the average do-it-yourself illusionist.

So to answer your question, Mike, no. You could not put a motor bike in a regular Dizzy Limit. The motor bike version requires a major, major outlay of equipment, rehearsal, lighting, etc. etc. My advice would be to look for a different method/illusion to accomplish the effect. An idea that jumps to mind (and I'm not necessarily saying that it is a good one) might be to adapt an asrah. It would still require a LOT of careful preparation, etc., but would most certainly be "easier" and less expensive than the cargo net idea.

While we're creatively brainstorming why not consider the application of b.a....lot's of things you can do with that...I never said that the cargo net was ezactly the same...just the same principal....the rigging alone to fly a full weight motorcycle makes me cringe....a lot of theater grids won't even support something that weighs that much...but the idea is the same....AC

J.C. Sum has plans for a motorcycle illusion named "Full Throttle" in one of his books ("Equilateral", maybe?). It's an appearance instead of a vanish, but it uses a smaller bike, does not appear to be difficult to construct, and it might be suitable if you are not tied to a motorcycle vanish.

Adam may be on to something with his BA idea. You could pull a screen or large cloth in front of the bike and rider, drop it and viola...

BA isn't neccasarily a quick simple thing either, but in the right venue with proper lighting, it is an option.

I've said neither that it was simple quick or cheap...but is it effective...under the right conditions yes!

This is a perfectly viable method to use to vanish something like a motorcycle, and it should be relatively easy to transport and to set up. Dondrake's BA books have some good methods for accomplishing this. Once built, it would be very flexible and very useful for a venue where you needed a quick vanish or appearance with a relatively short lead time to prepare.

Also if I am not mistaken, OSBORNE has a set of plans for the Cargo Net. Also I belive there is one for sale on the Magic Auction. I saw it on there a while back. I don't recal it being that expensive, and I think it was owned by Bill Smith. This might be quite an undertaking for someone to build themselves.

Dirk Arthur vanished a large "CAT" on WGM several years ago using a method similar to the motorcycle vanish...Brett Daniels had a different version in his show at the Gold Strike...They both did a fantastic job with this illusion....
