Hello guys, I am an independent filmmaker and theatre artist from India. I am also a student of close-up magic and Mentalism.
I got a mail today morning from one of my very talented and acclaimed theatre friends who is mounting an experimental play (Garbo) on an almost zero budget. Knowing my background in illusions, he wanted help from me for creating a visual on stage. Here's what the mail reads : Hello, The set of Garbo comprises of transparent plastic drapes from all three sides being fed on to the stage to create a feeling of a pit. while behind the plastic is a black backdrop which is about 2 ft away from the plastic drape. Hope this vague info helps you to get the idea of the setting. Now what I need is to create a stain on the centre of the plastic sheet infront of the backdrop.the scene happens so...Garbo is shot dead with her back to the audience , centrestage and then a red spot appears on the plastic behind which slowly increases in size as a stain. For this we thought some kind of chemical will be helpful. We have no info on that. It is not possible to put a projector to project an animated stain. I have tech rehearsal on 5th and need to try out things before that. PLEASE HELP .. If you need any more clarification please call or mail. Since I don't have much of a background in stage illusions, I am not being able to think of a solution for this problem. I was hoping some helpful people here on the Café who are in the know might be able to help. Thanks in advance, Chaitanya. |

I think I know what you are trying to do. I'm guessing the stain suddenly appears. My limited cinematography tells me to shoot a "angled mirror shot" ie position plastic (Why plastic, why not glue on real dirt if scene is in a hole/pit)flat on floor place mirror at 45 degree angle and 45 degrees to the side (confusing in text)and then spatter 'blood' to side of mirror onto plastic surface and film the action in the mirror with the camera close to mirror so it captures scene. obviously tilt camera to get correct orientation/perspective. Or set up a periscope (submarine thingy) so you can spatter the blood and film through the mirror. Hope this makes sense. overall set camera shooting close to mirror(like right infront of lens)set to 45 degree angle. Best of luck

Thanks a lot David! But I am getting a little confused here. Will this work for stage? And I think my friends want to do it without a projector..

Do a google search for "Pepper Ghost". That should get you more detail to what David is referring to.

Possibly have a second clear plastic with (stain already on it) behind the first clear plastic but in front of black backdrop. Have a black roller blind in front of stained plastic. When you want the stain to slowly appear, from back stage slowly lower roller blind using string.

Sometimes it seems there are more than one of me.

Yeah Ray, I think your idea is the way to go. I thought Chanku was talking only cinematography.
Chanku, my ideas of angled mirrors is to catch the scene on camera. Not for a live performance. I'm sorry I misunderstood your questions. Maybe I should read before I speak..... ray has a good idea above, but can I add that a spring loaded blood capsule attached to the front of 'Garbo' be released at the time of the shooting into her back occurs. Makes for a realistic bullet through body effect. Dave |
