I would really like an Australian stock whip by David Morgan or one of his apprentices.
For the record: If you order a whip from David Morgan's shop, there is a very good chance it will actually be made by one of his apprentices. He doesn't do a lot of the work himself anymore, but you will still get a 1st class whip.

I know quite a few whip artists up here in Boston, with at least three or four currently performing.
My favorite does a cutesy==>dominatrix vaudville (burlesque without the stripping, really) routine where she starts out using the whips as a jump rope and goes into some amazing double whipping. She's an amazing performer in general, but unfortunately no videos of her whipping. Of course, then there's the Fetish Flea where almost everyone will claim to be a professional with whips... Giving or receiving. |

I still love messing around with my old 14 foot nylon whip from Colorado Saddlery when they still made whips. Other than that I also cut playing cards in half with my 6 foot one.

I hear that whip artists are good at making snap decisions.

Not only is Chris McDaniel a great guy and performer I can say he has helped me out immensely over the years with my cracking. I myself prefer nylon american bull whips. I've tried both kangaroo and cow hide and while I think the look is beautiful, I just don't have the time or money for the upkeep. I've run through trying a bunch of different types as well (australian and american, stock whips, snake, etc.) I'm a particular type of guy when it comes to my whips and it took me a while to find the maker and style that I liked. I had first tried a 4' Rhett Kelley whip since the venues we perform in are often limited by space, but found it a bit too small and Rhett has a tendency to dip his nylon whips in paraffin (some people prefer this, I found quickly that I do not), so that is my fall back whip (actually my current whip since my working ones were stolen at a gig in Baltimore). I met a guy by the name of Stephen Huntress (www.neawhips.com) that does some amazing work and is pretty much a hobbyist who does it in his spare time and for some extra cash. After extensive talk with him I was able to come up with a design that works really well for me: A pair of 5' black nylon Standard Bulls. They had 2 bellies with a 16 plait overlay and 10 inch handles (with black crackers, but that's not really a big deal since I make my own crackers). He also had made me a 12' all black nylon recreation of the Indian Jones whip, but I really only used that when we did outside shows for drawing a crowd, never for cutting. He does some awesome work and is an all around nice guy that isn't very well known, if you do order something from him make sure to mention me and let him know where you heard about him. Keep in mind though he is really backed up with orders, after losing my set in Baltimore I immediately contacted him and he said at minimum it would be 8-10 weeks for replacements. Also I love Sylver and Gwydd's whip routine, heck I love Sylver and Gwydd |

Here in Florida they call Nylon whips "Florida Whips." I'm not sure if they have the right to claim the name but the cowboys I know say the humidity kept them from using leather hide whips so they were the first to use nylon. Makes sense to me but I don't know if it's a fact.
I will be working a small venue in a few months and need shorter whips. I think these will be my next two that I buy. 4 footers http://www.snakewhip.com/catalog1/Econom......nfo.html Then I will still have my 5' Tella for a back up. Gotta always have a back up. Danny, I agree. Upkeep is a big pain when it comes to roo hide but I can't get my nylon to fly straight. Perhaps it's just not broken in. Why do you feel 4' is too short? FacadeStiltBoy, How do you cut your cards in half? Coachmans crack? I have been wanting to learn that trick forever. Cutting cards that is, I can do a coachman if that is how you do it. Guess I just need to put on some goggles and practice flicking cards. I make my own crackers these day too. I first learned whips from a old roper whos father was a whip artist in Vaudeville. He taught me how to braid crackers but I forgot. For a while I bought them from Western Stage Props but $1.50 per got old. For $20 I bought two giant rolls of bailing twine. I put a coffee hook in the center of a 1' by 1" by 2" board and another coffee hook in a cordless drill. I can make one in under two minutes. Plus they are bright orange so it's easier to find if I lose one vs. the black crackers I used to buy. They just vanish. One of my favorite sights is this crazy man. http://www.youtube.com/user/AdamCWM Whiping in the snow? Really? I do a little roping. Flat spin, butterfly and wedding rings. That's about it. I would never perform it as I'm no Will Rogers. |

Rotten, I guess it's called the coachmen's crack. I'm just used to firing out a straight forward shot right at the card and it just gets cut in half. I'm not doing anything funky to the whip like using a piece of piano wire or instead of a regular cracker. It just takes practice. (too bad I just haven't had time to get any of that as of late.)

Rotten I believe Facade is talking about targeting with something/someone holding the card. Using either a forward or a circus crack. If you were holding the card yourself then you might use something like the coachmens crack.

Fire Whips are a whole different ball game..added saftey requirements for performer and audience as well as the venue itself, and what you're looking for out of the performance changes as well, as in the crack itself not being as "important".

I thought Facade was talking about the way Vince Bruce does it. Flicking them out in front of himself. I think he uses a coachmans for that. He's amazing. Cutting a cig out of his own mouth!!
Electricblue, it might be heavy duty but it is easy on my hands. I make my living as a juggler so the less wear and tear on them the better. |

I don't use them, but I know two people who do and they get a good reaction.
I definately agree with the safety precautions. Not the sort of stunt for a venue that paves with hay... which is just about every venue I've ever performed at. Quote: On 2009-03-10 02:33, Rodentia wrote:

We have a firewhip...I'm Still working up the nerve to light the durned thing!
I'm seconding Danny's post about neawhips. He suggested them to us. Sylver uses a twin set of black and red 4 footers indoors. Yes, they are nylon, but crack as well as any leather I have used and are virtually no maintenance. You can't really beat the price for the performance you can get out of them. Nylon whips can be used soaking wet without any damage. Working outdoors as we frequently do, this is a necessity. And have you ever cracked a wet bullwhip? The spray off the tip looks amazing! For me, nylon is the only way to go. Gwyd |

Thanks Danny and Gwyd,
After dropping another hundred + dollars on getting new keepers braided on three of my roo whips I am going to order some nylons from neawhips. They look real nice and the price can't be beat. Everything else in my show can be repaired with gaff tape or paint. I'm tired of dropping cash on whips and tired of the conditioning. Since I work on ships they get salty from the sea air alone. Thank you so much for your input. I never would have guessed, when I started this thread, that I would change my choice of whips. I sometimes dip my cracker in water before the first crack to send out a visual explosion. Gwyds right, it looks impressive. Will |
