This is a good source for that type of thing:
http://www.westernstageprops.com/miva/me......Code=WNB I get a lot of ropes from them.

Their nylon whips are ok. They're rather generic though. Steve does a much nicer job and will custom make the whip the way you want it for an extremely reasonable price. I've tried the WSP nylon whips and I definitely like my NEW whips much better. I think Gwyd and Sylver will echo that sentiment. The WSP nylon whips are very similar to the Dube nylon whip. Good to start off with but when you realize what you want from your whip and what type of performance you'll be doing a custom is much nicer.

I think a lot of it had to do with the 4 footer that I had, it really was not a quality whip with any kind of heft to it (something that I prefer). It's rather like a limp noodle in my opinion. I had used that 4 footer and 6 footer prior to it and just split the difference to 5' on a whim and found the length that I prefer. Really just a personal thing. Some people swear by 4'. |

I mostly like the WSP for the fact that they resemble my kangaroo whip so much.
So my reason for liking them is only applicable if you're me:) Here's a big list of whipmakers I found too: http://conway.san-francisco.ca.us/faq/vendors.html Quote: On 2009-03-12 10:25, Danny Borneo wrote:

6 of my 8 whips came from WSP. Have you seen their new prices??? This is the main reason I'm going with neawhips.
Thanks again guys! I'm gonna save a small fortune. Danny, do you like the bb loaded or electircal cord? I'm thinking since I'm used to the heft of roo shot loaded I'll go with the bb's. And 5 foot sounds perfect for me. Enough distance to be impressive but not to long so I can work smaller rooms. Will |

Exactly for the price you pay for the WSP whips you could some really great customs from NEA (mind you the wait can kill ya, but for such quality stuff I'm fine with waiting). But again, that's me I'm a huge fan of Steve's and can't recommend him enough. He's not looking to make a killing making whips, he just enjoys doing it and trying to make some extra scratch on the side.
I love the bb load personally. You'll definitely be happy Will and if there are any problems Steve is a pleasure to deal with |

Not near the same price. 75 bucks for nylon from NEA vs. almost $500 for roo from WSP. They used to be $350 till about 6 months ago. So I'm sold on nylon now.
How long of a wait are we talking? I would like them by the middle May. Should I order them asap? As I said, you guys have saved me a bundle. Thanks again. I love this place. Will |

My kangaroo whip was selling for a grand on David Morgan's website when I bought it. I didn't pay that, but I would have.
Look into the price of a hide and then the insanely time consuming process of braiding. The skill involved in braiding. The time and skill to cut the hide into perfect strips, which is done by hand in the best shops. It's worth it. In comparison, nylon is cheap and precut. Not that I'm knocking nylon whips, they have benefits for conditions when you want to preserve your leather, but they do not have the same feel as a good kangaroo whip. "PFTHUYHIHUHK!!!" (That was me spitting out my breakfast shake...)
$80 for a 4 foot nylon whip??!! That's what I payed for my 4' Kangaroo! Let's see, exactly the same skills... heckuvah lot cheaper materials... I don't know where this pricing is coming from but I thought nylon was supposed to be a less expensive alternative? Most nylon whips are made from military paracord, which can be purchased at any Army Surplus store for about ten dollars per gazillion feet. Compare that to the price of a roo hide. There should legally be a $50 price cap on anything that can be made from recycled pop bottles or military cast offs.

This guy is just as expensive.
http://www.cowwhips.com/order/ If I were making whips I would want even more money. As much time as that must take. I don't think you gonna find a roo whip for $80 anymore. |

A roo whip for $80? Depends on who you know
Being a broke but rescourceful college student, I have devised a solution. I am going to check out David Morgans book from the library. I am going to salvage free electrical wiring for the cores. I am going to hit my friend up for a spool of paracord. I will make 103 whips. The first hundred are to get good at it. Then I will have a good whip and a couple I can sell, and/or give away for Christmas. "Happy New Year Gramma, now go tend my cattle!" Quote: On 2009-03-13 12:26, Rotten wrote:

Guess it all comes down to personal preferences and what someone is willing to pay. I personally am very satisfied with Steve's work from NEA and the quality product he makes, making me more than happy to pay for what he feels his time and craftsmanship are worth. Gwyd and Sylver also said they are in the same boat on that......so, different strokes for different folks. Also, if you check back a bit I posted about my opinion of Rhett Kelly whips and his way of dipping them in paraffin amongst other things that I found that I did not like about them. Although some people swear by them.

Darn, Steve just got back to me. There is a heck of along wait. Looks like I won't be able to get the whips in time to use them for the show I wanted. He has a 7 week waiting period before he could even start on them.
: ( Bummed out. |

Yeah unfortunately he had to take some more hours at work from what I understand. As much time as he'd like to dedicate to making whips it just ain't paying the bills. Economic times are wonderful If it's any help I'm waiting on my replacements and the initial estimate for when mine would be done has moved up a bit so things could change.

Hey I could forge up a neat galvanized guy wire steel whip in a day if anyone is interested. Don;t think it would work well as a whip, but hey it's metal!

Fortunately I am a fire safety nut...
My ideal conditions to first light a firewhip would be at the end of a dock over deep water right after it has rained heavily... Normally we do our first lightups with new tools in the winter standing in the snow- Can't get much safer than that when it comes to location (Although I have managed to set snow on fire...it was kinda neat...) It will get lit at some point this summer. I'm still practicing with it unlit (It has a different heft and feel from the other whips I am used to so I have to get more comfortable with the way it moves). When we do light it up, I guarantee that a camera will be running. If it goes well, you will all be in awe! If not...then you will get the chance to laugh at me screaming and dropping the whip in terror. Either way, it will be worth doing. G |
