Italy has the worse mail service in the civilized world because the country is divided into different postal companies who don't play well together.
The postal service does a very good job and the cost, as Vandy pointed out, isn't bad for someone picking up mail and delivering it for you. There are individuals who are problems and that is the fault of the postal service wanting to be so diverse that they lowered employee standards. They also don't have to worry about performance once in and a lot of people decide not to work in those circumstances, most do take personal pride in doing a good job though. Same thing happened with the LAPD a couple decades ago when they had to lower standards to be more diverse (in physical size etc which meant putting lii' dudes up against big criminals). When I lived in the bay area the postal workers went up to your door box and people didn't have road side boxes. Where I live now we don't even have postal employees, they hire guys to do it part time and some folks have to drive a couple miles to their box. Overall they do a great job though. As for the dog thing I've seen a postal guy squirt a dog who was standing there wagging its tail. I'd report the guy but he'll just say you have an aggressive dog and they have the right to stop providing service to you for that reason (not that I believe your dog is aggressive). I'd work for the postal service but I don't fit any of the profiles they need for their rainbow. |

Just down the street from my house is a private business called "Goin' Postal." I'm from Oklahoma where the first postal incedent happened in Edmond. At first I found the name offensive. Now I love the place. The lady that owns it is so friendly and helpful. Her prices are slightly higher than the post office but the post office is miles away from me so what it saves in gas and time it is worth it. Plus I am in and out in less than five minutes unless I want to chat with her.
I love private biz and don't care for gov. control. |

80,000,000 people, and a lot of households. It's still an impressive accomplishment.

That many people? Wow, I never realized there were that many residents of Germany. I wonder how many Montana has. 1 million maybe?

Dunno. But Germany has 80 million plus.
Hey, I'm still a very proud American. It ain't no big deal or anything, but I've lived in Asia, America, Hawaii (which is still America, technically), and Europe. And the postal service in Germany is top notch. Credit where credit is due, and all that. |

First: wow, 80 mil in a place the size of Montana?! What is it, wall to wall people? How's traffic and congestion in the big city? From what I see on TV, Germany looks like one beautiful giant forest. I'm blown away...
Second: In 1989 when I got my PO Box, it cost $24. per year. Now it costs $79. per year. |

I get some of my neighbors mail delivered to me about 4 or 5 times a year. No telling how many times my neighbors have gotten some of my stuff and I never knew about it. One time I caught the mailman as he was arriving and I (nicely) brought it to his attention. His so-so reaction told me that I can probably expect more mismailed items. But, I'm not a complainer, and I know that it's not always an easy job, but how hard could it be to maybe cut it down to maybe just 1 or 2 mismailings per year?
Stamps are going up AGAIN? OK, I realize it's not the end of the world, and it could be worse, but... Stamps - 33% increase in 9 years My (modest) Salary - 16 % DECREASE in 9 years! And that's NOT due to inflation - its an actual reduction in the dollar amount, due to being outsourced and having to re-enter the field at a lower salary. Figure in inflation and... oh my!! Maybe I should write a letter to congress. THAT'S what I'll do! Anybody got a stamp? Ron

Those of you who want to privatize the post office- um, you realize it takes no tax dollars, running solely off revenue from stamps and products. You think costs would drop if it were privatized? I did some research online...
Currently, if I wanted to send a 1 lbs package across town, the USPS would charge me $4.95 for next day delivery. FedEx would charge me $6.81, and UPS would charge me $21.83. DHL? They no longer deliver in the US due to cost. (I hear they actually subcontract with the USPS for local deliveries.) Oh, and those prices are without any insurance on anything.

UPS would charge you $6.85 for a one pound package across town and it would be delivered next day 98% of the time, which is the same delivery percentage for next day which was closer to the rate you posted. The Fedex rate you posted was also a ground rate and equal to UPS ground (Fedex ground formerly known as RPS).
Just in case you are keeping score from where you live you can ship ground and have delivery, with pretty much complete confidence, to Oregon, Nevada, and as far South as around Bakersfield. DHL, who bought Airborne, was horrible domestically and do a very good job with international shipments. I'm not surprised they pulled out of the domestic market, they couldn't compete. |

Santa, yes, but of course you're still going to pay $6.81 whether you're shipping a 1 lbs package, or two sheets of paper.* I've gotten letters from New York to Los Angeles in one day on such frequency that although they don't promise overnight delivery, I'd wager any given letter would get there overnight. (Plus USPS delivers ASAP. FedEx will hold a package in the local distribution center until day 3 or 5 if the customer selected 3-5 day shipping as opposed to overnight.)
* - I am aware that this is because FedEx knows it cannot beat the USPS on a per-ounce rate. If the USPS privatized, things would change. Depending on who took over, they may stop charging by the ounce- or maybe FedEx would try and be competitive in the greeting card market.

Postal service goes by the ounce, Fedex and UPS etc go by the pound so a fraction of a pound goes to the next highest pound. It is apples and oranges, I never used the postal service in over 20 years in transportation. I was just clarifying that there is not that great of a difference in cost between Fedex Ground (which is operated seperately from Fedex) and UPS ground service. I'd be happy to explain how the distribution system works but it would bore the heck out of everyone.
I will tell you this, the carriers make a fortune with those overnight envelopes, you can fit a $@)#$load into a container. |

I don't mind the costs so much as the delivery time. Besides manufacturing magic effects, I also manufacture latex masks and mascots. In early September I sent, via U.S. Postal Service, a package of Halloween merchandise from Kalamazoo, Michigan to the UK. The store in the UK received the package in November. Obviously to late for the Halloween season so they refused the package. I finally got the package back to my shop in late February. Almost six months to go there and back again. Maybe next time I should swim the package there or find another shipping company. Can you spell Fedex? I don't ship UPS anymore because I don't like the way that the drivers play Basketball with the packages. It's like they have a competition going for who can destroy the most merchandise in the least amount of time!
