Tom,
You're just gonna have to schedule your holiday around WMS next year! If I drive again I'm quite sure I could fit 2 guitars in for a little diversion! |

There is/was a really good book on how to play the blues harp put out by Oak publications during the 1960's-1970's. It should still be available.

Hillbilly is a term referring to people who dwell in rural, mountainous areas of the United States, primarily Appalachia and the Ozarks. Due to its strongly stereotypical connotations, the term is frequently considered derogatory, and so is usually offensive to those Americans of Ozarkan and Appalachian heritage. However, the term is also used in celebration of their culture by mountain people themselves. Such co-opting and neutralizing use is almost exclusively reserved for Appalachian people themselves.
I on the other hand might be considered a California Horseman or commonly referred to as a Cowboy! Geographically you are off by 2500-3000 miles and culturally, there is little or no comparison! Don't they teach those things in Oz? Cheers, MMc |

I don't know if it's true or not, but legend has it that the terms "hillbilly" and "redneck" originated with the Scot-Irish who moved to America in the early 19th century. They had been called these names in Ireland, but they came with them when they settled in America...in VA, KY, TN and other mountainous states in the south.

Hey there Cowboy, we may be related. I'm from Scotland as well.
I didn't mean my earlier comments to be derogatory towards you Mickey. Apologies to you! I sometimes do hillbilly impersonations after living with so many Yanks over the years when I stayed overseas. All in good fun though. Heck I'm from the outback of Australia and saw a lot of the lifestyle of our Aborigines. From Queensland in the outback there used to be a lot of references to Texas when I was growing up. Things like they eat the biggest steaks, have the biggest cattle, the biggest ranches etc. Here in Aussie land we call ranches, cattle stations, possibly from the British. Well is Queensland we used to think we had the biggest steaks in the world, the best cattle and of course the biggest cattle stations. The place I grew up in is called Mount Isa. Geographically the Mount Isa City Council is the largest city in the world. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Isa,_Queensland It's boundaries went to the nearst town of 400 people which was 117 miles to the west. Funny thing is at the time there was only about 25,000 people in the whole area. 90% of the people were miners, like my dad, brothers, brother in law etc, and my sister and nieces all worked for the mine. No offense taken JoJo!
Some of the greatest horsemen I know are from Australia and come here to make it in the bigs as trainers. Most start in Texas and by the time they work their way West to Cali they have picked up a Texas drawl and coupled with the Aussie twist....... Interesting to say the least! There are few real working ranches left in the US that can even compare to a mid sized Aussie "Station"! Mick |

Made it home safe, but very late.. flight to Nashville connection was 2.5 hours late... but we made it luggage and all. Feeling a lot better than when I left WMS (exhaustion and dehydration).... all seems good. Now to bed.
