No, simply upgrade to premier. It is an instant upgrade and costs nothing
You will be able to take credit card via buy it now button, without the customer needing a paypal account. You will be charged about 2% plus 30 cents for each transaction, no matter the type. I use the buy it now button for deposits, I simply email a link to a page with payment instructions to the person. If you want to see my deposit page, let me know and I will PM it to you.

I don't use it for shows as I am taking paid gigs at this point, but I have used it for another business I run.
It works great. I am not sure at this point about the various account types paypal offers (it's been a number of years since I set mine up) but I set up a paypal business account at no cost. I can take E checks, credit cards or paypal transfers. I can also send invoices to customers and they can pay on line, even if they don't have a paypal account. The funds sit in your paypal account until you ask to have them transferred to your bank account. You can also get a paypal debit card that will allow you to spend your paypal balance directly out of the account without having to wait the 3-4 days it takes to have funds transferred to your bank account. I found this especially useful when I needed to pick up materials for a customer order. All in all, it's very handy. The transaction fees are about the same as if you had a merchant processing account, but you don't pay a monthly fee for the account like you would with a regular account.

I don't think upgrading your paypal account to a business account costs anything. You just have to verify a few details I think, but those paying you will see your status as a "verified business" or something like that.
I believe you do need to upgrade your account to do things like send invoices, or use a virtual terminal. That being said, if you do go the virtual terminal route, I would suggest authorize.net as a better, cheaper alternative. |

The big difference between a personal account and premier is that with premier you get charged a fee on all money you collect. A personal account allows you to receive money without paying any fees but is subject to limits in how much you can receive and the transactions cannot be funded with a credit card.

That's why I switched to premier. You are limited to accepting 5 credit card transactions a year, not a month, a year.
I don't mind the fees, it costs only a dollar and change to take a $50 deposit.

I found that after I did the 5 transactions they automatically upgraded me to premier.

There is a $30.00 fee per month if you are a business with Pay Pal
What do I need to know ? (Application review time: approx. 48 hours) Pricing $30 monthly fee 2.4% - 3.1% + $0.30 USD per transaction Application Process You'll receive an email in about 48 hours with your application status Fax information You may need to fax additional documents, especially if you don't have a functioning website Please note: Virtual Terminal is not available in U.S. territories. It is currently limited to the continental United States. |

The $30 is for the virtual terminal which is an extra service for business accounts. I had pp's virtual terminal for about a year until they 'upgraded' me to a buggy version and left me without credit card processing for a month.
I now use authorize.net the fees are lower, and it's nice having a real merchant account. |

I would fell more comfortable processing the credit card myself and not waiting for my customers to log on and do it them self I would like to know instantly if the card has gone threw and not Waite until they get around to doing it As you know gettting a contract back in time is a pain This seems like one more thing to keep track of On authorize.net the virtual terminal is free I think I will be going with them

I agree it's better to process credit cards yourself (and looks more professional that sending people to a paypal page) but be aware that Authorize.net will cost you a monthly fee as well.
That being said, I prefer Authorize.net |

I have yet to pay a monthly fee to paypal for the link on my site. Is that an East Coast thing?

I have never thought of using paypal as a payment method, I usualy accept cheque or cash. Would you reccomend setting up a paypal account? Is it worth it? And is it easy to use?
Thanks Zach |

Very easy to use and I just got reimbursed $205 because I complained about a Café scammer ("Colin Mandel") and they froze his account in time . . . In other words, you get some degree of security for transactions.
