I know this is often asked here, however, my interest in the answer is slightly different...
I am one of those who would rather have and study from just ONE SOURCE FIRST. Get very competent and comfortable with that, then only move on. Even if that takes years... Btw, I just got Reality Is Plastic by Anthony Jacquin, a wonderful book on Impromptu Hypnotism, I love it. But Ant doesn't cover Stage Hypnotism at all. He does however stress NOT to go looking for that one "elusive" induction thus my wanting to narrow it down to just the best of the best, in your opinions... I would love to study the Basics of Stage Hypnotism, I think it's fascinating how one person can affect so many with just their voice, action and presence. Being a Magician/Illusionist for more than 10 years, I know that that is no easy feat. To manage two volunteers on Stage is hard enough, let alone influence ten of them to "do your bidding", so to speak. Stage Hypnotism looks like real Magic to me, if there was such a thing... I cannot study it in person just yet as I'm in Malaysia and the costs are a bit prohibitive for me at this point to pursue that option. But in the near future, I will... But I digress... So, if I only had the choice to buy ONE Instructional DVD on Stage Hypnotism, which one would it be and why? Price is not really an issue since it'll just be ONE DVD... Thanks everyone!

Pakar, I deeply admire your interest in the practice of stage hypnosis. I encourage you to continue your studies and practices. I'm sure you'll get several recommendations, both from people who like a particular DVD (or set of DVDs), and from people who have made DVDs.
But there's a difficulty here. You see, they're all correct. Let me give you an example of this problem. I just received and viewed a DVD called The Secrets of Stage Hypnosis Revealed by Dr. James Lazzarini. On his website he has the following quotes about this video: “Excellent, straightforward, nicely produced. Very effective!” R.D.S. New York “Both entertaining and educational!” G.E.D. California So I purchased it and viewed it. My review: amateurish quality, dated and questionable information, annoying bad performance, superficial and very basic. So are R.D.S. and G.E.D. wrong in their reviews? Nope. But I'm not wrong in my review, either. And that's the problem. What's good for one person may be useless to another. You may need something as basic and superficial as I think this DVD is. Or maybe you're already beyond it. I have no way of knowing. And there's another level, too. I found a couple of things highly annoying about this DVD. For example, he was constantly pacing forward and back on the stage. I wanted to tie him down so he'd be still. Such meaningless pacing is often a sign of insecurity and nervousness. Perhaps if I wasn't so affected by the performance I would have liked the DVD more. So the thing is, there are personal issues and personal interpretations that might make a DVD ideal for you and wrong for me, or perfect for me and wrong for you. With these considerations, can you really know what is good for you? I have a set of videotapes from a few years ago made by a Canadian magician/hypnotist. The information seemed great. Then I saw a tape of his performance and he was absolutely horrible. It ruined everything for me and I won't recommend those videos. I here great things about the DVD set by Richard Nongard, so much so that I have purchased the set and should be getting them any day. They may be fantastic for me and wrong for you, or they may be wrong for me and perfect for you. I don't know. What this means is that with any recommendation caveat emptor! "Let the buyer beware!" I have had four, in-person trainings in stage hypnosis. I learned from all of them. I have many tapes and DVDs ranging from comprehensive studies to individual topics like getting your actors to be more active on stage and how to devise a perfect introductory talk. My advice to you, then, is this: 1) Yes, I know that costs are probably much more than "a bit prohibitive," but I would suggest that you save your money--perhaps get an additional job, stop going to movies or concerts, cancel cable TV, brown bag your lunch rather than go to a Caféteria or restaurant, etc. It may take you six months to be able to earn and save up enough money to attend an in-person training, but you'll find that it's worth it. 2) After you take in-person training, get as many books and videos as possible. Even the ones that you don't think are good will teach you something, if only that you already know more than what's on them. The books and videos will all expand what you learn from the in-person training. I realize that there will be people who will give all sorts of reasons for disagreeing with my advice, and that's good. It's great that you get different opinions. But let me ask you this: do you have any bad habits? We all do. Why? Because they develop without our realizing it and then they are difficult to break. If you take an in-person training, you'll have someone to watch what you're doing and make corrections and give guidance so you learn things correctly from the start. If you learn things from some DVD, you may get something wrong. In fact, the video may have something correct and you might misinterpret it and get it wrong. Your wrong practice becomes a habit and that becomes difficult to break. If you're doing things wrong and have lots of failures you may lose that drive, interest, and ambition, something which I would be sad for. Because of your past posts and your clear passion and interest, I think you could be a great stage hypnotist. I'd like to see that. That's why I'd like to see you get it right from the start. Disclaimer: I do not teach stage hypnosis. |

I would have to say that you should check out my See-Saw DVD.
I created the See Saw induction during last summer and I've released it on a 3-DVD set with over 5 hours of training. It genuinely and safely allows you to hypnotize anyone (assuming they have consented to it, which they clearly have on stage), within about 60-90 seconds (that includes the pre-talk, suggestibility test and induction). What's more it can be used on stage, in therapy or on the streets and is safe (no collapsing randomly to the ground). I teach it to be done standing or sitting and I use it as the sole induction in my show (It even includes footage of my show containing it!) It takes you from zero-to-hero in stage hypnosis and is £47. |

Hi Robert,
can I ask how much of the 5 hour training is dedicated to teaching me the 60 second see-saw induction? Is it complicated? Anthony

Ive studied lots of dvd's .. if I had to pick one, I feel I've learned the most from the terry stokes / richard nongard one. so simply, plain english laid out how to: pre-talk, induction and awesome insight on making it work. I learned more from that than I did my 800.00 certification course!

Hi Ant,
I would say probably about 2 hours of it are teaching the exact ins and outs of the induction (plus 4 or 5 variations of it). The remainder is teaching the important principles of hypnotism and stage hypnosis that I know that you will understand. Cheers, Rob |

Wow, thanks dmkraig, for that in depth explanation... Thank you.. I am saving for the in person training, even considering an online "apprenticeship", if that makes sense...
RobertTempleComedyHypnotist, I will consider it... kingjay, I was already heavily considering Mr. Nongard's DVDs as my pick... Just wanted to know what others thought as well... Ant and Bobser, thanks...

Terry has so much insight, I loved making the DVD with him. And athough the instruction on the DVD is based in stage hypnosis, it is that exact induction I use with many of my clinical clients as well. Kingjay is right, for the price, you cant go wrong with that DVD or the new course at http://www.StageHypnosisTrianing.com

Terry explains so much.. (in a style like your crazy uncle) no big words.. no extra hystory crap .. straight forward stage show.... remember, for a stage show - your there to entertain .... not to prove hypnosis is real

Thanks, appreciate it. I am taking a course now and have a workshop supported by the AMA on the 23rd so I hope I can learn all the basics and then some prior to learning stage portions. Ive seen and been in stage hypnosis and have practiced some quick induction type stunts (not really knowing how) and then got some good deals on the coursework.
My plans are not really large stage effects but possibly adding some smaller type work to my presentations. Also, just learning more about the subconcious to make my readings better. PS: I watched a few clips Terry on your site, very impressive stuff. If this is what can expect from your DVDs, I think I may have to add it at a later date. I espcially liked the convincer clip at the high school. Candin Mentalist:)

Glad you enjoyed the clips of me with Terry. Awesome guy. Cerbone and I were just in San Antonio, looking forward to coming back again to do training...
And a word of caution.... the AMA does not lend its support to ANY hypnosis trianing that trains unlicensed undegreed people, and certainly opposes stage hypnosis as unethical. And so either don't mention you intend to do stage hypnosis, or whoever you are getting your training from is making a claim of support they do not actually have...

Thanks for advice. I do have some medical training and have another career and a few pedigrees (but certainly still a newby with hypnosis). I probably will never do the stage type entertainment as seen by the pros but I certainly can learn from them Nongard. I got bit by this bug like all my OCD injected hobbies.
PS: Yes, I can understand how one can view stage hypnosis the same way some mentalists see magicians. Candin
