Searching has become a pointless activity here. Classic example:
"ERROR! Username invalid or not found. For better accuracy, please try again using the "Search Username" feature." Upon trying to correct the spelling of the user name: "ERROR! Sorry, you cannot run a new search so soon after your last search was run. Please try again shortly." -JoeJoe

It's something you have to learn to live with.
But what really sticks in my craw is when someone says, "you should have used the search engine". Right. With two minutes between searches, you can easily blow a half hour trying to find something. That's time I don't have. |

Oh come on Jeff, you're on the Café all the time. You must have a half hour to play with the search engine
JoeJoe, maybe you haven't noticed but next to the user name section, there's a search User Name feature. If you click on that and enter any part of a members name, it will give you all the choices. Pick the one that applies and do your search. It eliminates the possibility of spelling errors and you won't have to worry about the 2 minute time restriction.

I didn't know his user name. I was going to link on another forum to a post I remember him making, but since I didn't have the time to wait for the search results I opt'd to just not bother.
Are you searching through the actual files? As a computer programmer, I might suggest building a search index that can be searched rather quickly - much like all the search engines do. Break it down into one file per month, a simple Perl/PHP script could search them sequentially rather quickly. Don't even attempt to search with MySQL - flat file is the way to go. It would be the single greatest improvement you could make to this place. Google can search billions of records in seconds, certainly there is a better method to search the Café. -JoeJoe

Quote: Yes, and they have thousands of computers to do it. We have only one, and the search engine has to search 2,741,407 posts, which are broken up into 446,515 keywords, include the ability for exact-phrase searches, and include *all* records for every search (not just the last 30 or 60 days like some other forums do), all because the membership here will accept nothing less.

Somebody kick me off the computer, will ya?
