Intro: I was lucky enough to receive a pre-release copy of this effect so thank you to all the people at Mental Playground Productions.
Trick: Mirror Creator: Matthew Mello History: Matt credits Derren Brown as the starting point for this trick and also credits Banachek for another part of the trick. Price:$15.00 Where Can I Get It? http://www.thementalplayground.com/mirror.html Effect: Give your mind reading ability to any spectator. They will read your mind with 100% accuracy, and you can prove it! Offer to teach your mind reading skills to the spectator, for a price. Ask to borrow a bill, as it will be important later. You tell the spectator you are thinking of a two digit number. The spectator then makes a guess and is correct! To prove it you show the first two numbers of the serial number on the borrowed bill. You say this is how you thought of the number. They match! • No Stooges • No Pre-show • No Electronics • Nothing is ever written down • No Force (And No, you aren't walking around with 99 different bills on you.) Format:This 16 page PDF comes with 2 alternate handlings, which create seemingly different effects. This along with 12 photos gives you the tools to bring your mind reading routines to another level. Quality: It’s a fairly normal PDF. Nothing fancy here but it teaches you everything you need to know. The pictures do help out quite a bit as well. Method: There is a small “gimmick” that is used and might I add, very, very clever. It’s easy to make and can be used for many other things besides this specific trick. Fairly simple and nothing super involved or complicated here. Preparation: There is a one-time preparation for this effect that should not take you more than probably 15-20 minutes. After that, you can perform this effect as much as you like. Although, eventually you will probably want to remake your gimmick since it might wear out a bit. Gimmick: Obviously since this is an instant download, you will have to make the gimmick. As said above, it won’t take you long to make and most likely will not have to buy anything to make it. This is a very versatile gimmick and can be used for lots of other mentalism type tricks. Alternative One: This isn’t as strong as the original serial number variation and I’d rather just use a swami gimmick to achieve this effect. Alternative Two: This is more of a novel drawing duplication type effect that can be very strong and also a perfect lead in to “Improv Nightshades”. As stated by Matt, this is the version that a lot of people might use and like even more than the original routine. I think I would agree with that. Definitely a good alternative to the original. Additional Ideas: Here Matt gives some ideas to make your presentation a bit better. He also gives another idea that uses the serial number, but in a different way than the original. Both are worth a read. Angles: There aren’t any angle problems to worry about here. Yay! Difficulty: On a scale of 1-10 (Ten being the hardest) I’d give this about a 2 or 3. If you run through this a couple of times and get yourself familiar with it, you’ll be fine. There really aren’t any “moves” either. Overall: The power of this effect can be extremely strong. Don’t underestimate it. This is a “winner” and even if you don’t like that original routine idea, Matt has provided enough additional ideas to make everybody happy. Plus, you learn how to make a really cool gimmick that you can use in other mentalism! So even though I received this for free, I truly think that if I had paid the money I would’ve been pleased with my purchase. It’s only $15.00 and you can’t go wrong with such a powerful effect. Score 9/10 |

Hm... I am not yet sure what to think of it. I like the premise but I am not too happy with the workings. About 5 years ago, Wonder man Fred used the basic principle of this in connection with an ACAAN presentation in a lecture in Germany and many many many years ago, Astor published a manuscript called "Master Melody Mystery" using the second principle involved. But this combination, I admit, appears to be new.
I have not tried it yet in front of a real audience and maybe the "boldness" of the method will really fool them. I hope it will Regards Stefan http://www.stefanmagie.de/shop.htm |

Can someone go more in depth with the drawing dupe? I.e. is it on a bill? etc
Thanks, Bryan |

There must have been a clitch on my end...I tried the site again and paypal works just fine.
Yes, it is an on-the-bill drawing duplication. This is fantastic. I just got it and read through it. I like everything about this. I got this because when I read the description, it seemed like such a natural way for someone to demonstrate that a participant could be the mind reader. The effect is exactly as it reads. The method is wonderful. The options provided in the manuscript are great. Now, I can't wait to do it. Thanks, Matthew. |

Yes the drawing duplication is done on the bill. You ask if anyones ever gotten a dollar bill with a mustache drawn on George Washington. Everyone I'm sure has seen a bill like this. The effect than goes into having the spectator drawn something on George. You give them a list of options ie...hat, tie, sunglasses, eye patch...that sort of thing. Once they have made their drawing you remove your bill from your pocket and show it to be the same drawing. That version is more of a prediction. You could just as easily do it as a drawing duplication. You would just have to separate the timing slightly. So, you would have them make a drawing and hide it. You would then make a drawing and place the bill into your pocket. You would do a few more routines and then at the very end you could bring out the bills again. You would have them open theirs and show what they've drawn, you then open your bill and show the same thing. It is a very fun routine and I think a lot of people will have fun with it. It's a very interesting close-up drawing duplication that looks completely off the cuff. And it actually makes sense because most people have seen drawings like the mustache and sunglasses on george.
Nicholas, I am glad you enjoyed it. I have a bunch of other releases coming out soon. Most will be on DVD though. Have fun performing. Matt Mello |

Hey Café-goers,
The gracious Matt Mello has trusted me with a pre-release copy and I'll do my best to represent the effect (sans financial interest) with an unbiased perspective from a workers standpoint. I like the effect for a number of qualities that it posseses. It IS practical. The various handlings and versions presented cover nearly all situations that a performer would present the effect in. Considering that mentalism and minimalism often go hand in hand, I think anyone who reads the PDF will love Matts solution to the issues that might deter a performer from carrying this effects. At least a couple of the effects can be performed a one time prep that can be done in a few minutes. The effect itself is kin to something you would see Mr. Brown performing and I believe he was cited as the inspiration for one of the versions. The structure of the effect shows clearly the gift that Matt has for handling some of the minor discrepencies that the spectator may notice. Overall, all things considered, I give this an 8 out of 10. Great Job Matt now... Give us more of what you've been keeping from us! -Zach Heath

Exactly,
But now, that I played around with this idea bit, I am beginning to like it more and more. As I live in Germany I also think you cannot expect a spectator to give you 5 EUR (4$) just to show them a trick. Howver, I am thinking of using a (special) envelope that is in the spectator's hands right from the beginning and to produce the chosen number written on a card inside. (See "Bang On" for the technique). Stefan |

Stefan,
I too have been doign something similar. I have been using a bang on style wallet or alternativly the SNAKES wallet by Wayne Dobson. I pretend to write something on a business card at the begining and put it into the wallet. At the end of the trick they are left with not only m business card but the pre predicted number. It's instanly resetted. Just remember which one has been removed and in your next performance, at the begining of the trick, write that one down and put it in the envelope. Jamie Daws

Very nice routine Jamie. Instant reset. Very clean.
Stefan/Parmenion, I wasn't aware that you didn't have "1 dollar bills" over there. You could use coins. Not sure if they're more common. I also received an email from Dee Christopher about using it to apparently guess your birthday. You would have an envelope with a birthday card in it. They would do the number guess and get maybe 3/4. You would then open the envelope and show the card to be dated March 4, 2009. Or something similar. Anyone who knows my effect should be able to work out a way to do this. Glad to see people are liking this. Matt Mello |

Hi Matt,
I also thought of coins, but then you would need to find coins dating from particular years and I do not own a euro dating from 1921 ;-) - as they were lauchend only a couple of years ago... But I like Jamie's idea and will give it a try Stefan |

Hey Mathew,
Thanks, it's a nice way of doing it. Another little idea I've been using is a Booktest. With a small amount of memory work, it is easy to have them a number randomly, turn to that page in the book and on the top line, think of the most interesting word on that line. This works perfectly and maks the whole effect sooo clean. Perfect way to end any book or magazine test! Jamie Daws

I don't know the method for this effect, but I do think that - with a twist - it could be used with euro bills...
For instance "I'm going to make you an offer you can't refuse. I'll teach you how to read minds for 5cents. If my methods fail on you, you get this 5 euro note for wasting your time. Fair ? " Again, I don't own the e-book, so I'm only talking about keeping the premise of "asking a small fee for rendered services" |

I have just download Mirror and I think is a brilliant and clever method.
I´m working an idea on it with a match book with numbers... tell you later... Congrats Matt Ponch |
