I ran into some back trouble a few months ago, which ended my exercise program. I gain weight very easily and have to exercise or...it comes on very quickly.
Well....it happened. I saw some video of me and..I'm HUGE. I show it right away. Goes right to my face. Anyway, I started one meal, two shakes program and it's starting to come off. I figure 2 months and I'll be...better than I am. I like the shakes. This was probably a blessing that it happened. I should have caught it earlier. Thanks heavens for video.

Fat? How fat?
I used to be stick thin, 20 or 30 years ago, but I've put on about 20 pounds over that time period. Which isn't so bad, I guess. My BMI today is right around 25, which puts me at the borderline between normal and overweight. I fully understand that the BMI (body mass index) is flawed and is a rough guide at best ... but still ... what are the BMIs of others here, and how do you view your weight regardless of what the BMI score is? To calculate your BMI, see here: http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/ Oh, and Christopher, what is this one meal and two shakes program of which you speak?

You are wanna be's! I quit smoking about 11 years ago and blew out my knee at around the same time, which meant I went from being active to not moving well at all. In one year I gained over 150 pounds! Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
When I was in my 30s I was around 170 and 6 foot tall, now I'm 5'11 and over 300 pounds. Sure I'm still mega cute but it hurts cuz chubby chasers are few and far between. |

REALLY fat. From 170 to 210 in less than 90 days. It gores right in my face, so I look 300 lbs. I gain immediately if I don't exercise. At 50 I REALLY gain.
I do a protein shake in the morning, salad and protein and apple or some fruit for lunch and a shake at night. You need water, but not that much food. I started this week and I'm now 208. Of course I could be 211 tomorrow. lol. I had to stop the beer. OUCH. That's what hurts. MagicSanta, ever watch the Biggest Loser? It's amazing what those folks lose.

I don't think that is the healthiest diet Chris!
First thing you should do is stop drinking everything but water. Second thing, cut out fats like butter, bacon, and mayo. Those two should be no brainers ... the 3rd thing to do is stop eating bread. Bread is a complex carbohydrate and the body says "just store it as fat and we'll just use this protein for energy". With those three steps, I lost over 75 pounds in a few months and I did so without a lot of exercise. Good luck! -JoeJoe

JoeJoe, thanks so much for the advice and concern.
I think I'm doing what you did, except for the shakes. Pro's and cons to those, but right now they are working. 75 lbs. is quite impressive!

I watch biggest loser because I pick "the hot fat chick" and watch as the heater emerges.
I don't eat badly (my wife did, she lost 21 pounds in three months because I've cut her off of certain foods) but I need to excercise. My problem is I have collapsed feet and nerve damage in them along with bad knees and hips and I have a hard time walking. I need to force myself though. Once I get moving I can lose weight because I don't carry it well. |

I just don't wear it well. I got some new running shoes and some wonderful orthotics that allowed me to actually go run tonight. It felt very good. No back trouble at all. OK, I'm not going to go skitzo with the scale thing, but I'm down to 207. I figure two months and all will be good again. I'm a fairly disciplined person and very good at meeting goals, so...... Thanks for the support everyone!

I'm in the same boat. In my teens and early tenties I was 6'1", 150-160 pounds. Skinny, but "wiry". Then I got a job at a health club, started bodybuilding, and got up to 195 at only 8% bodyfat. I could bench about 300, squat almost 600, and deadlift almost 500 pounds. I did shoulder shrugs with 400 pounds, and military presses for high reps with 200. I could run like the wind, mile after mile, and I played tennis, softball, basketball and volleyball.
When I quit that job, the workouts ended for the most part, and I continued to consume the same amount of calories. I'd always been a "hard-gainer", but at 26, my metabolism dropped significantly, almost overnight. I started to balloon up and got over 250. Got down to about 210-215 and stayed there through most of my thirties. At 40 I started eating better (no fad diets for me!), started hitting the weights a bit, and walked several miles every day. The problem was, I'd done serious joint, cartilage, tendon, and ligament damage from lifting all that heavy weight and running on concrete and asphalt back when I was Mr. Fitness. I got severe plantar fasciaitus in both feet, bursitus big time in both shoulders. I was shot in the hip when I was eighteen, and that came back to haunt me. I had broken my left ankle several times, and messed up both knees. A car accident gave me a small fracture in my neck, whiplash, and aggravated my bad upper back. I injured my lower back. In short, my body is worn down, because I overtrained in my teens and twenties! At 40, I got down to under a deuce again, but now I'm back up to about 218. I can't do any really strenuous activity, but I've started hitting the stationary bike a little at a time, and I've got a Total Gym and some Resistance bands to work on muscle tone--no more heavy weights! I also do a stretching regimen every day to try to maintain at least some semblence of flexibility. I don't look too bad except for a pot belly--but at least it's a HARD belly--it isn't all flappy and soft. The bummer of it is that I used to be much stronger than I looked, and I looked fairly strong! When I was a youth minister, I had two 19 year old boys try to wrestle me to the ground. Both were over six feet--one weighed 210, the other 230. I lifted one on each shoulder and started trotting down the sidewalk with them. If I tried that now, I'd be in the hospital! I miss being the guy people would ask to lift something or open something.

Do something that gets your heart rate up to and over 125 bpm, and keep it there for at least 45 minutes to 1 hour per day.
Buy a heart rate monitor and learn what your target fat burning zone is. Protein in the morning, protein for lunch, light carbs for dinner. TONS of water...so important, I can't even begin to tell you. Avoid at all cost: Sugar, white (bread, pasta, etc.) partially hydrogenated and carrageenin ingredients. Learn to be like Jack Lelane! And of course... RIDE A BICYCLE!!! Good luck! |

Losing weight isn't hard as long as you don't put pressure on yourself..Heres my tips, and how I did it..Start exercising slowly ie 10 minutes max running(on soft surfaces not cement) per session in the first week...build up gradually, within a month you'll be up to 20-30 minutes in 2 months 30 -40.
Take up resistance training;jion a gym see a personal trainer and get a weights program ,as this will speed up your metabolism and is fantastic for your bones. Eat small meals regularly, as this also speed up your metabolism. Don't avoid carbs..eat complex carbs with low GI(Rye bread, wholemeal bread wholemeal pasta, brown rice),not simple carbs like white bread and white pasta(empty carbs) Also I would say buy a juicer..if you start the day with a raw juice of celery beetroot carrot spinach and ginger you will feel energized as and it actually tastes good as their is sugar in the beets and the ginger kiks it along. My other tip is to use these as guidelines.Dont pressure yourself. If you want to eat junk do it but limit your portion size Just have a handfull of fries rather than a bag ,have a bit of chocolate on the way but not to much. Also on top of your exercise program try and do some exercise between each meal and find exercises you enjoy. You so can do this. |

Scott, that was a lot about I didn't know. Thanks for taking the time to share that. It must take you awhile to get moving in the morning.
Justin, Luke, thanks for those tips. I think dropping the beer, bread and pasta, which I think were the culprits when I had to stop running, will be the biggest factor. I stated this on March 10 at 210. I gave my self 60 days without that bad stuff. I'm only going to do the scale once a week. (Tuesday is the Biggest loser day, so that will be it). I started this thread sort of as a poking fun at myself at what happened, but am thrilled by folks sharing and supporting. Perhaps others will get on a healthy program. OK, off to the park for a run.

Christopher, I had to use orthotics to even be able to walk a short distance. The Dr. Scholl's DynaStep inserts worked great for me. Now they have a new thing; you step on this machine and it measures where the pressure is and recommends a semi-custom insert:
http://www.footmapping.com/ I haven't tried it, but a friend swears by it. I'm thinking of giving it a shot. Many times when I walk even a short distance at a good pace part of my calf begins to cramp. (Basically due to lack of conditioning of the peronteus longus muscle that runs down the outside edge of the calf and around the ankle bone.) I can rest/stretch it for a few minutes after about a mile and then I can walk all day if necessary. Orthotics have completely and instantly eliminated the problem in the past. Running changes the motion of my foot and I don't get that pain. But, weighing around 240 and having miraculously avoided major knee problems despite taking a very bad parachute landing, I don't like to push my luck on that front. (Digression: I will NOT jump out of a perfectly sound aircraft anymore unless it is on fire. And I want to see the fire. And it better be bad.) Of course, if I lose few more pounds the orthotics won't even be necessary. It's amazing what a difference even a few pounds makes! My goal is 190, about 50 lbs from where I am now. I've been there before, I recall passing through that weight on my way up... |
