Hello everybody.
Numberjay's here (Jay for friends). I've been in love with magic since a child and then rediscovered this passion 10 years ago, after reading an Al Koran's book which was not about mentalism at all but which gave me a desire to discover more about this remarkable man. So, my interest is Mentalism. I've read and studied a lot since then and came up with my own 'toolkit' of principles and deceptions which I use to baffle friends. So I'm not a professional at all, my expertise is computer programming, but who knows someday maybe... I'd like to contribute and exchange ideas and opinions, especially about 'presentation' (we already know all the tricks, don't we? Cheers, Numberjay |

Hello and welcome Jay. I am new as well and the people on the forum have been great at welcoming professionals and non-professionals alike. As a computer programmer you may enjoy the material regarding math based effects and puzzles at the bottom of the topics menu, then again you may get enough of it at work so avoid that area altogether

Thanks Tstark
I'm gonna have a look around for sure. It's very difficult to come up with a presentation for math based effects, but when you're able to conceal the math aspect of it, then you have very baffling stuff and I like it. Cheers Numberjay |

Numberjay,
In regards to you last post, check out Larry Becker's Stunner's Plus book for a two-for-one effect using a cleverly disguised math principal. Forgive me, I can't remember the name of it (there are a LOT of effects in there!) but it is his attempt to come up with a non-gimmicked version of David Copperfield's "Room Service" effect. It's not an effect that many cite when discussing this book, but it has served me very well!

Welcome to the Magic Café numberjay! There is a lot to learn in the Pennies Forum of the Café. Ortiz in his book Strong Magic talks about Koran and few of his routines in different places in his book..I like this quote, " When you work with people, you must be in control. If you cannot control, you do not belong on the stage. " Al Koran , Lecture Notes of Fantastic Koran. Lol so true. He sounds like an interesting guy, I didn't know there was a book about him.
Anyways welcome. See you on the Penny forum. Rick~

Hi Jay!
Welcome to the Café! I’m also a beginner in magic, but it has become already a good freelance source of income, and even though I do close up magic and children magic too, mentalism is so far my favorite area of magic. Especially because when I do it in places with a good audience, such as theaters, the reaction of the public is incredible. So, from beginner to beginner, I will love to share some ideas with you. Giovanni. |

Thanks everybody for the warm welcome and the interesting reading suggestions.
By the way, the Al Koran's book I was referring to is titled "Bring Out The Magic In Your Mind". When I first read the book, I was disapponted. When I re-read it, I was fascinated. I don't know how many times I read this book. It's a book about psychology, visualization, belief, and so on... not at all about mentalism. I later discovered that Al Koran had it ghost written by a woman. But the content of the book and the many references to Al Koran's feats throughout made me curious for knowing more about him. And then I discovered a new universe called Mentalism (way before Derren Brown appeared on TV). Giovanni, it'll be my pleasure to share ideas with you and anybody who's interested, especially on presentation: how to present the effects as strong as possible. Numberjay |

Welcome NumberJay
I like you am pretty new to magic, and soon found myself attracted to mentalism, because the reactions are so much stronger - and a lot can be done impromptu (or close to it). I have found "Penny for your thought" a great resource. Enjoy! |
