Looks like a rather nice effect to me. Especially the Snow Globe!
MagicSanta, I usually enjoy your reviews, but can you go in to more detail as to why this effect is bad? AP. |

Setting it up is a hassle, no one is going to fall for it, there is so much more one can do instead. It might entertain a four year old if you can manage to drop something on your foot, they like that.

I just picked this up off Theory 11. I think its kind of cool. I don't know Jessie and I don't now anything about the stuff mentioned above as far as who he is. But its still a cool little thing that would go over good if it was pulled off right. Some tips for clean-up and making it totally examinable are given in the download.
Do I think its worth $10.00... Nah. Maybe the standard $5.00 that you see most of their stuff going for. But what the heck. I'll make it up and try it out and see how it goes. I'll probably do some kind of a crystal ball effect with it.

I contacted Jesse shortly after he released this because I created the same thing independently. He was very cool about it and even offered to credit me. Very nice guy.
Anyway, I have used this table hopping and can say that this does offer some nice eye candy. If you are looking for something different you might want to give this a chance. P.S. I get nothing for plugging this, I just have used it and know people like how visual this is.

Spello change is a really nice, visual revelation. I recommend it. The clean up is great.

I have this effect and I like it. It's not examinable. But it's very visual, it reminds me of "WOW" by Masuda. It's a nice addition.

I have to admit when I saw Theory11.com promoting Jesse's latest effect, I lost a lot of respect for those guys. The problem with much of Jesse's effects is that they look great on camera with perfect angles and editing, but in practice they lack a lot. I've purchased a bunch of them and then dumped them on eBay. Theory11 guys, what were you thinking?

And the cellophane is completely normal. I think it's a fun trick that is simple to perform, amazing to watch, and truly looks astonishing. Lu Chen's performance of it on television in China was brilliant. For $9.95, I think it's a steal. But yeah - that's what we were thinking. Especially as someone that prides themselves on writing constructive magic reviews, I don't find it fair nor judicious of you to judge this effect - let alone our team - without knowing anything about it. I think this effect deserves a fair shot and a second look. You just may like it! If not, to each his own. Jonathan, thanks for the response. Let me clarify without digressing or starting a typical Café rant thread (one of the reasons why I don't participate that often) -- I've always been impressed with the quality of Theory 11 offerings as is evidenced by the stuff I've purchased from you over the years. It's stuff that always breaks new ground in either effect or presentation or method.
Jesse's stuff has been shredded in many places. He also has his fans. In purchasing his stuff in the past, I have found most of it to be somewhat derivative in nature and usually looks much better on video with perfect angles and edits than it does in real life. For that reason, I won't buy his products anymore. You're right, though, I should not judge "Spellochange" without trying it myself. But comparing it to your existing product offerings, it's definitely a notch down from the high-quality effects and videos you have produced to date. I guess if I were in your shoes I would aim higher, but that's just me. -- Your friend and fan, Steven P.S.: I never considered myself a very influential voice when it comes to magic reviews, but thanks for at least thinking of me in those kind terms. |

This is NOT original. I have in fact seen this done before. I wish for the life of me I could remember the other person's name. I learned this a couple of years ago, but I can't remember what source I got it from.
Either way, I completely agree with MagicSanta's review on this. I've purchased many, many things from Theory11, but if this is the route they are going to take, then the route I'm taking is not to buy anymore stuff from them.

Look, constructive criticism is one thing. But vague, generic negativity from a random guy with 4,000 posts under a fake, comical name on the Magic Café is hardly reason for us to lose sleep at night. Our team is composed of some of the most respected names in this industry. We take crediting, historical accuracy, and quality more seriously than anyone. Our track record, our team, and our products from Jason England, Chris Kenner, Homer Liwag, Apollo Robbins, Dan White, and 25 other artists speak for themselves. I need not defend our reputation from "Magic Santa." But in this case, I must defend Jesse. I just met him for the first time a few weeks ago, but every communication and interaction with him thus far has been professional, courteous, friendly, and above board. If it weren't, we certainly wouldn't be working with him. In the past week alone, Spello has received praise from Doug McKenzie, Larry Fong, Steve Cohen, and Chris Kenner (who wants to use it as a trick with his new baby Zoe - the baby writing changes into a real revelation). I think it's a fun trick that is simple to perform, amazing to watch, and truly looks astonishing. Lu Chen's performance of it on television in China was brilliant. But to each his own. For $9.95, I think it's a steal. If at any time - on this matter or other - you think we may have made an error, by all means, we're human, contact us directly and let us know. But I don't believe that to be the case here. This was published several years ago (although not in video form) by Jesse - and no crediting issue has surfaced in that time. To be clear, this is not an effect that will suit everyone's tastes. Your performance style may differ from my own or someone else's. But I like the effect and the reviews have agreed. Can I ask what the difference is between this trick and Hieroglyphics by Jay Steffen that was published in Genii Magazine?

Spellochange is - I believe - more versatile, and the cellophane is examinable at all times. In terms of effect to the spectator, however, the two tricks look very similar. The difference is the method. // jonathan.bayme ceo / theory11 |

Hi Everyone! I'd like to take a minute to address some questions and comments... Some of these things have been answered, but I just wanted to make an official post.
Spellochange utilizes a brand new method, completely different than Hieroglyphics by Jay Steffen (or any other similar effect). This brand new method opens the door to many possibilities, and leaves the card box and cellophane examinable. Yes, Spellochange is examinable! If you own the original Spellochange, or the new 1on1 video, this is all explained in the instructions. Please read carefully: I have never stolen an effect or idea from anyone. Never have, never will. If you don't believe me, than prove it. I have been accused, but those situations were always cleared up. Café members don't always check back on these topics, so they remain misinformed. I don't create magic just to make money. If I showed you my bank statements, you would believe me! I perform and practice everything I create for random people, friends, family, other magicians, small animals, etc... Theory11 is an amazing company, with incredibly talented people involved in every aspect. Thank you Bayme for your support here. I totally agree, no need to defend ourselves here. Please join our thread at theory11.com to learn more about Spellochange, and the infamous Jesse Feinberg. haha I'm not really infamous, it was a joke. And I was also joking about talking to small animals |
