Natanel -
I MUST point out that fashion is a regional matter -- I live in a desert where it is JUST NOW starting to drop below 100 degrees (F) evenings and our summers go to 113 degrees (but it is a dry heat). The use of a short sleeve under a linen jacket is totally acceptable EXCEPT for formal wear. AND a guayabara sort (Mexican, Cuban or Philippine wedding shirt is the "dress up norm" at a "tie and jacket" function. In fact one of our congressmen had quite a problem with the rules of Congress his first term -- he did not own any ties and only a couple of jackets -- -but lots of Guayabaras. (Not the one made in Korea either.) I was raised in New York where tie and jacket -- long sleeves on shirts -- were the only way to gain admittance to certain places. Moving to Arizona it felt strange shifting fashion -- but cleaning bills and potential heat stroke made a big difference. And to wear suit and tie in Hawaii in an outdoors venue? We are a truly members of a world-wide forum with a broad fashion plate. I agree that grunge and dressing down to street level of extreme grunge or bad taste is not in my ken as good costuming -- but there is a lot of room in those empty jacket sleeves for pulls and gimmick. By the way -- I do appreciate many of your tips here -- and wish there was more advice for us older, frumpier and fatter guys who have demonstrated a life-long ability to always be overweight --

What about ditching the jacket and just wearing a vest with long sleeve shirt, sleeves rolled up? Would look professional, but still be cool. Depending on your need for pockets, you can make adjustments to the vest...
Also, sleeves should always be rolled up ... or not present. Hudson |

Stanyon,
Sleeves should be rolled up because the audience will assume "it's up your sleeve". Even if that is not the case, they think they've figured out how you did your magic -- and half of the entertainment is the audience walking away saying, "I just can figure out...." Hudson |

It's an epiphany I tell 'ya!
I've been doing this for 39 years..it just never occured to me. Maybe that's why, in 39 years, I've never rolled back my sleeves. I figured guys rolled back their sleeves to show off their ink. As HB Jr. said so well when running the Vanishing Birdcage, "Did you hear that gentleman say it's up his sleeve? Up yours!"
