Feel free to ask me any questions, I do get on this board about once every two or three days. Would be glad to help. Cheers Blair [/quote] Hello Blair, As I said I'm learning the tarot now (and not scripted lines out of a book), but I have been doing what I guess I could call mini readings with palm reading or a better term might be hit and runs, with individuals I work with and most are in their early 20's, and both females and males. I wanted to see how I would do, kind of testing the waters, and went with the knowledge of what I read in books, but gave readings on what I could see and just let the words flow. It was a hit (as other postings have said in different topics: 'short or small can be more powerful then long and drawn out'. I have done about 11 of these, and the individuals have said I was right on. I also noticed my bosses hands, and just casually mentioned to another employee that it seems the boss had a cruel or evil side to him. Well a week later the boss got fired by corporate management for stealing money (and he is no kid and was the store manager), I heard about it when I got to work, and asked the employee I mentioned the bosses hands to, and he came right back with "you were right about what you seen in his hands". As you said Blair, and as the individual who is teaching me the tarot reading skills, it seems I have gotten over the stumbling block of learning when I stopped trying to remember the scripts or what the books say word for word, and just took the knowledge (or layout of lines in the hand), and then let the words flow from inside. By the way Blair, your book was excellent. Thank You Ed Quote:
We fulminate against people who claim to be psychic, or talk to the dead, and yet some would have us believe that bits of colored paper have some sort of superpower! Hi Peter, I'm not one to put down those who talk to the dead, claim to be psychics etc.. as they more or less have found a nitch for what they do. I may shake my head a lot in private (do to the sitter), but will not put them down in public. There is a guy 'psychic' here in Chicago, who has a radio show every Saturday, and does readings telling the caller if they are an old soul or young soul etc... and then goes on to allow the caller to ask him a question to a problem or person, and he then gives them advise with his 'psychic abilities'. Again I just shake my head, but he does have a great set up, for not only do the callers 'ask him' the guestion, but he has a phone screener that the callers have to get through first. He also has made the claim that Randi refuses to meet with him for the Randi Challange. But as I have posted in the past, one can receive a nice 'how to' lesson every week for free just from listening to the show. Take care Peter, Ed

I have been doing tarot readings (as oppose to magic with tarot cards) for a long time now and to be honest, I feel every deck has its own personality and preferences. A little *out there* I know, but if you're really in tune with the deck you're working with over time you will figure out what is OK and what is not.
For example, my Hanson-Roberts Tarot is so friendly and easy-going that I take them with me everywhere. They seem to love everyone and are not that picky about who they read for, where... On the other hand, my Masonic Tarot Deck which has gold printed onto the cards have never been touched by anyone other than myself. I rarely use them in fact, I resort to them when I need some serious spiritual guidance. Some people sleep with their tarot decks under their pillows at night to create a connection with them and shuffle them non-stop when they are new to sort of get to know them. If you are using them strictly for performance, you can do whatever you want with them. If you use them to receive messages and/or for personal meditation, do what feels right. Listen and they will tell you. |

I know this may seem terribly old-fashioned, but I really prefer the Rider-Waite pack, and the version I really like is called "The Original Rider-Waite Tarot Pack." It comes in a purple and gold cardboard box. There is a little book with it.
I wrap my reading cards in blue silk, and carry them either in a drawstring bag or in a box. I like these OR the Royal Fez Morroccon tarot, which is out of print. The ORWTP has a nice white border, which gives you a lot of leeway, and the colors are very rich. Some readers don't like them. That's fine. Use what floats your boat. I have more than 60 tarot decks and these are just the ones that I really feel an affinity with. And, even though it's not a really "hip" book on the Tarot, Tarot for Dummies will at least get you started. There is a package available with Tarot for Dummies that has the second best version of the Rider pack in it.

I may be out of line here but I believe you are asking what sleights we use. When I use the Tarot I use more subtleties than sleights. The elmsley count and a double turnover are about it! I never try to hold the deck in mechanics grip unless need be. After all, I'm not going to show anybody the cannibal kings with Tarot deck. I use peeks a lot, false cuts, self-working effects. The less I handle the cards, the better the effect. As Brother Doug has mentioned, don't make a show out of the deck. Let it be a spotlight!

Oi!
At the risk of creating a problem I'll offer my two-cents worth. Firstly, I loathe armchair "experts" who do not use or work with a specific item day in and out that want to sound like they know something... especially in this particular field. I'll not mention names, but at least one or two such individuals have responded to this question. Simply put, if you have picked up the tarot a few times in the past decade, that does not make you an expert. You're simply jumping onto the current bandwagon and wanting to "cheat" the system in doing so, by lessening something like Tarot and making it another magic trick. Anyone EXPERIENCED in Tarot or any other form of divination will tell you one important fact: YOU DON'T NEED THE TRICKERY! That is, if you're doing Readings. Trickery comes off, in the mind of the sitter, as just that. You will become known as a confidence swindler or some stupid magician playing the public as fools... either way, YOU LOOSE! Now, for the contradiction... If and when I'm PERFORMING I use only the Rider-Waite deck. I do this for one very simple and logical reason -- it's the deck whose art is easiest recognized by the average human being. Secondly, I have little direct respect for this deck in that it tends to be the one most novices start out with and thus, the energy around it can be rather chaotic... that is to say, it doesn't "talk to me" the way my other decks do. The point is, you should never sell yourself as a Reader unless you are doing legit readings and tossing all the happy horse crap ideas clung to by magicians to the wayside. Trust me, I'm not the only experienced Reader that is involved with magic that will tell you that. Trust the deck and trust the system and learn how to observe the client and go with your gut. It's the coolest magic you'll ever encounter, if you just give yourself the chance to learn it and experience it. Yes, there are tons of awesome routines available for working with Tarot, Runes, etc. My good friend Rick Maue has delivered a plethora of such bits as have Jim Magus, Stephan Minch and, as mentioned, T.A. Waters. I've used a lot of this material but primarily in settings where the audience knows I'm there to entertain them, not lead them on. Even my backroom sessions with clients from a Home PSI Party get the tricks; everything from Browning's Psuedo-Psychic Gambit to the Richie Technique. There are those "other" situations in which a legit Reader such as myself (and about two dozen others I know, who roam these forums) will "cheat"... just a little! PSYCHIC FAIRS... when you're in business and need to meet that daily expense nut, you must hustle! That means you need to deliver certain experiences to sitters that will get them to talking and thus, divert their interest in visiting another Reader. I won't deny that this is an all out con -- a game if you would, that pays! I'll not go into details as to what is done precisely, just know that circumstances at times invoke our darker natures, just so we can gain the upper hand. Dewey speaks of this in the book PSYCHO BABBLE and I believe RED HOT COLD READINGS. I know that it's also been freely discussed in other noted tomes pertaining to this field so please, let's not start the flame war... As far as using trickery with Tarot, I'll say GO FOR IT provided you are not using it steadily as a means to bilk the public. You will get caught and when you do, legal issues become very tangible. Whatever routines you like, discover the simplest ways of making them happen. The real trick to doing tricks with items like Tarot or Runes, is to make everything clean, natural and deliberate. I strive to keep my hands off the items as much as possible, allowing the participants that are gathered to do most of the work. The psychological impact this simple step has will transform your "tricks" to a very different demension within the sitter's mind. I'll not ramble any further... I know I sound as if I'm standing on either side of the same fence and I may not have made things as clear as I probably should have, but I hope the meat of the message sinks in with folks so that they know how to separate their work as a Reader from what we do as Entertainers. Best of luck! |
