For those of you who perform Fantasio`s Real Vanishing Cane or have his book "My canes and candles" I have a question. What reel is recommended for that effect ? I have 3 books on Fantasio products by David Ginn but I can`t find that effect in them. Looks like Fantasio has only explained it in his latest book.

As the actual reel is hooked up to yourself from the start and as the cane needs to go quickly and smoothly, the best reel I found was to use one that is commercially available and is sold as a key chain. Use the large type which is robust and sure-fire. Don't try to use one that is for the "magic" market as they simply won't be powerful enough.
As a rough guide they cost here in the UK £2.00 for the type I am talking about ( approx 3 dollars ). If you are still unsure what type I mean let me know and I will try to upload a pic of it. I have used this effect in the past and my advise is to also have the actual reel attached to your trousers and not your jacket, which is very easy as it already comes with a belt clip. Thanks Stuart
I do have 2-3 strong key chains without brake that have belt clips. I never used them since they have line made of a small chain that produce a lot of noise. |

You can open them up (be careful not to let the spring unwind), and replace the chain with strong line. Fishing line works well.
Another option is to buy the cheap, cheap ID tag reels, such as sold at Wal Mart (not sure where in Croatia!). Use 2 or three of them together, and you'll get a stronger pulling force. Have the end of all the lines hook to a common point that attaches to the cane. I've used that idea with very good success for other things that needed to 'vanish'.

Stuart, where can you buy the ones without the chain? What are they sold as? It took me ages to find a strong one and it had a chain. I also spent ages trying to wind the spring back up. Didn't go in the bin though, it's in one of my many draws full of utter tat.

Neal,
I got mine from my local indoor market where they also sold watches, batteries and general odds and ends. A quick look around your local bric a brac market should find them. I will try to upload an actual pic of one somehow so you can see what it actually is / looks like. Stuart Brown British Magical Champion Of Stage Manipulation 2007

Following a few enquiries I've included 3 links here to the actual pictures of what the key chain pull looks like.

That looks like a standard "key back" reel, but I too have not seen them here in the states with anything except a chain. The biggest problem with the chain is that it's noisy.

Michael, Yes this is what is commercially sold and used to hold keys so you don't "lose them". Obviously they are called different things in different countries. I have had several emails and questions about them. In the UK they are sold either with a chain or as shown a strong cord / thread.
If anyone wants one and cannot get hold of one without the chain please get in touch with me and I will see what I can do for you. They are sold in different sizes too. Stuart Brown British Magical Champion Of Stage Manipulation 2007

Michael, when I was over at Kidabra last year, I found them in Walmart. As Stuart says, they are strong, and fast.

Thanks Stuart, I'll have a good look around. Sure I'll find some somewhere. They look exactly like the ones I have but mine have a chain in them. Quite a strong pull on them.

The Key Bak reel is available without the chain and uses a coated wire. I purchased one at the local Harbor tool store. It came with a flyer discribing all the models.
Have not had a chance to look on the web yet but they are here somewhere, a California company. |

Michael, sorry, I don't remember (although I vaguely recollect seeing them amongst the paper-clips and other 'officey' things), and it was a HUGE store (in Sevierville).
When I went back two days later, they had been moved to another place and took me an age to find them. Even the staff weren't sure; not only where they were located, but what I was talking about. Must have been my Lancashre, UK accent. Happy searching, Dave.

I'm sure it wasn't your accent. I get the same look from Wal Mart employees here in Alabama... but then again, I'm originally from Illinois! LOL
I've seen the ones in the office supply dept., but the ones I've found are for ID tags. Those are the ones I use 2 or 3 together to get the strentgh of pull. A whole pack of those is cheaper than the "Key-Backs" I've found (which are still not much), plus I don't have to change out the chain! I guess whatever works. I'll keep checking, though. Thanks! ~michael
