I always have a fun night at Ralphie's. Every Monday night for the past 2 years, I have been the house-magician. Last night was packed as usual! I was performing my first table, I pretty much always start with the
'Johnny Table'— yes, that is right, the kid that has control of his parents and loves magic. The kid that has been there every Monday for the past 14 to 15 months. Every Monday! New magic every time. I don't know if any magicians out there have solid regulars, but this table beats all my normal regulars. I feel compelled to show them new magic every Monday. Which keeps me growing, an ever growing repertoire! Does anyone else have one of those? Anyhoo— last night was such a great night. Had the waiters tell me that the place is getting more packed every week, and they can see the difference. Several tips, (yes, I do accept, if they catch me before I leave their table) several tables questioning me about possible private parties, cute waitresses occasionally flirting with me. You know the usual Monday night! I was showing this table, called the 'Johnny's table,' the always opening table, and newest magic. I performed several effects, and ended with the 'World's fastest Card Trick' which is a transpo of two playing cards. Very clean method of a card being placed under the close-up pad, and in my hands. I asked Johnny's friend, Dylan (who has been there every Monday night, since Christmas) to blow on the card. Well, he blew, but there was a very small, one drip, of spit that landed on the card. I wasn't going to say anything, but it was clearly noticable at least to the parents. I mumbled 'Ahhh, you got some spit on there'. Upon looking back up at the kid he said, "Ok", and proceeded to spit a big one on the card, and on the close-up pad. I was stunned for a moment, his dad spoke up really loud 'DYLAN', and I laughed, and said, "Under the spit, under the close-up pad, is the card ... that changed places. Thanks to your magicial spit". His parents were apologizing for him. I stated, 'it's okay', and laughed, leaving some very red faces. I should mention the dad came over and booked his son's birthday party in June! HEHEHE! Thought it was a great story, and you guys are the only ones that I can share it with!
Theater, cinemas, and literature are all better forums for telling stories or creating drama. Stand-up comedy is better for telling jokes. But magic is unique in creating the Twilight Zone sense of turning a corner and finding yourself on another street, in another town, in another country. Hi Russell,
Isn't it a lot of fun when you can tell a story like that? Usually only a magician will appreciate the humor and your quick comeback while your friends may just scrunch up their faces and say ewww. (Okay deep down if someone did that while I was table hopping I would probably have thought yuck!) On the other hand I may have said "Does the name Pavlov ring a bell?"... Seems the resturant is lucky to have you Russell and by not making the kid feel bad you've got another fan. Nice story. |

Hi Chrystal,
Thanks for your reply. Yes, it's very fun to tell stories like that. I'm glad I found this Magic Café site. I have so many nights in which funny scenarios take place. Now, I have some 'source' to share it with! Most 'lay-people' can't understand some of the stories, moves, etc., but some really do try. Thanks again for your reply!

Great story! Also, great thinking on your feet.
You are a true professional. The restaurant hired you to give people a positive experience, and you did that. But I get the impression you would have done that in any show. Dylan's parents are lucky to be able to hire someone like you! I wonder, did you let Dylan pick up the card, or did you?
Humans make life so interesting. Do you know that in a universe so full of wonders, they have managed to create boredom. Quite astonishing.

Bill,
Glad that you liked the story. Thanks for the kind words. You do have to stay on your toes at all times. That wasn't something I have ever planned for either, just something that seemed right to say. Hehehe! BTW- Dylan had free choice of the card. It's an old principle that I saw at my very first magic convention. Really great piece of magic though.
