If so, print out that page out and take it in to Arby's and ask to see the manager. Explain that if his pay check is not corrected you will file a complaint with the Department of Labor. Then, go to http://arby.com and use the "Contact Us" page to let their corporate office aware of what happened. Every time I have used a corporate website to file a complain against a local business I have had positive response. So that's what I'd do. Remember, it's only Arby's - he won't be working there the rest of his life. So if the manager gets mad and wants to make his life difficult, so what. I wouldn't hesitate to quit. -JoeJoe

Ah Skip!
Why did you give that one away! Trade secrets and all!! On the plus side, maybe Ken's son can go back and make his $8 back plus a little interest. |

My first job as a kid was as a bagger at a local grocery store. I was bitter for a few years about the treatment I received. In recent years I came to realize that the old guy running the place wasn't just my boss, he was my teacher. I learned a great deal at his store that helped me with every job I've had since. In spite of my mistakes he never deducted from my paycheque.
There was a new store opening in the building where I work and the owner had a group of five people madly stocking shelves overnight while he sat in a chair reading and eating. One of them told me they weren't getting paid. I asked why they were doing this without pay and was told that the best one was going to be the manager. At the end when he had his shelves fully stocked he told them he would call the manager that evening to come in and finish the work. The next day when they opened it was staffed entirely by his family. I hope they took my advice and called the labor board and complained about it. One of the difficulties we have now is that franchises are one step removed from the corporations and as such tend to be run like little gulags. Labor laws are no good if people don't know about them. |

Worse thing I encountered like that was in the Silicon Valley. A popular thing to do was go into a company as a consultant and then telling the client that they could save money by contracting out their shipping and warehousing. The contract employees would get paid less and the company wouldn't have to pay them benefits etc., cheap low life companies would bite hard on this kind of idea (companies like Sun Microsystems). Typically the new contract company would hire the freshly laid off employees at a lower rate and reduced benefits and put them back into the same job they just got done telling the company wasn't being done right. I had a major dislike for these consultants because they always intend on that contract no matter how well run the department being looked at.
This guy I knew ran one of these consultant companies and he was going to take over a rather large logistics department and he ran around the valley hiring his work friends and people he met in the industry offering them more money and a better gig. Around 15 people quit their jobs to join up with this clown. So these people show up to work and guess what? No jobs. The guy had not tied anything down and was anticipating this great take over and it never took place and those 15 people had already left their old jobs and their positions were filled. Nice huh? |

If there's one near by, I suggest your son try Target. Other than showing us a "Unions are evil" video, I thought it was a pretty good place to work. And they always had at least one day a month to have cookies, huge sandwiches, ice cream sundaes, or barbecues for us. And we had a tv and movies in our particular break room.

The Wal*Mart I work at used to have cook-outs once a quarter if we kept the accident rate down. They haven't done that in a while.
They also provide food during stressful periods. *inventory* *shudder* A larger paycheck would be nice... but we shouldn't ask for miracles.

Ah, inventory... Truly, mentally disturbing. My favorite was the fact that it was hot when I was asked to help, and my inventory buddy and I got assigned the freezer. It was like being in a York Peppermint Patty commercial!
But... *cracks knuckles* I know you ain't trying to flash no Wal-Mart colors here... I really don't want to have to put on a red shirt and khaki pants and get ghetto.

We didn't have to do the actual inventory. We had to do "prep." *shudder* I hope I have a new job by this time next year.

Wait, maybe we did that...
We put stickers on all the boxes of stuff and wrote how much of each thing was in it, stacked stuff up and labeled it the same way... Whatever it was, sure was boring.

As a kid I worked as a bank teller and the branch I worked in was open Saturdays. One week they decided that only the drive-in window would be open on Saturdays but they didn't post it in time so the people who normally did their banking only on Saturday would know. They had me work the lone window for the whole branch and it was kind of madhouse, with cars backed up down the street. I wound up being $500 short, and afterwards I was able to piece together what happened -- in short, I gave one woman too much money. The bank didn't dock it from my pay, and there was a pretty huge customer outcry over the change in hours. The next week they went back to regular Saturday banking.

You MUST do what has been mentioned here several times. Make sure that his full pay for ALL hours worked are on that check.
Do not allow your son's first lesson from his first job be that people can steal from him with no consequences. |
