A few weeks ago, there was some excitement over the way that a run of Paul Fox cups from RnT II accepted or did not accept a lacrosse ball. At that time, I mentioned that there was a fairly wide acceptable size variation in lacrosse balls, according to the NCAA Lacrosse rules.
Yesterday, I went to one of our local sporting goods shops, Sport Authority, and purchased a huge quantity of lacrosse balls from a couple of different manufacturers. I also ordered a few dozen on line last week. This is what I have learned. Some of the balls I purchased a year or so ago were very close to the upper acceptable limit of diameters of lacrosse balls, perhaps even greater than indicated in the rule book. The permissible size of these balls is between 7 3/4 inches and 8 inches in circumference. That would translate as 2.47 inches to 2.55 inches in diameter, respectively. That's more than 1/16 of an inch. The 2.55 inch balls don't fit a Paul Fox cup well at all. So, when I went on this shopping spree, I took along an inexpensive set of dial calipers. Most of the balls I checked were obviously at the low end of the permissible sizes. Consequently, all the balls I brought home with me fit easily into a Paul Fox cup. I'll report on the mail order balls shortly.

No, but when I was in college, I went out for basketball. I didn't make it, though.
They already had a basketball. But back to the topic. I got a dozen Voit lacrosse balls from Dick's Sports in the mail today. They all seem to be usable for Paul Fox cups. However, the surfaces of some of these balls seemed to be pitted. Since I can only vouch for the balls I have here, I think the best recommendation would be to purchase the balls with the cup you are going to use in hand.

Wish I had a set of Paul Fox cups! Maybe the new RNT owners will continue the PF cups and I will buy one, and then I will buy lots of Lacrosse balls.
Hey Bill, maybe one day we could do a C&Bs duet with Lacrosse balls and use lacrosse sticks to throw the balls back and forth. A ball disappears from my cup and I use the magic lacross stick to send an invisible ball to you and it appears under one of your cups! |

I got another dozen lacrosse balls from Dick's Sports this afternoon. These were STX brand. They miked out at being a bit larger than the Voit balls.
They will not fit into a Paul Fox cup.

Find Kent Gunn's routine. I guarantee you that it will fool the pants off of you.
Also, check out Al Schneider's L.A. Street Cups routine. You might even find that Tim Ellis and Sue Webster's Runaround Sue is quite entertaining. Consider this: Jason Latimer won FISM with his unique cups and balls routine in 2003. The cups and balls have been with us for millennia. They will be with us for more millenia to come.

I got another box of lacrosse balls from Sports Stop. These were made by Warrior. All of them were too large for a Paul Fox cup; however, I did get a half dozen "no bounce" lacrosse balls. If you need a 2.5 inch ball that doesn't bounce, this would be it.
You could paint two lacrosse balls to match each other.

Until I ordered all these balls, I had no idea how many different kinds there are.
They have balls with "grip" surfaces, which hare kind of knobby, no-bounce balls, glow in the dark balls, and others too fierce to mention in mixed company.

Why do you need so many lacrosse balls, Bill? Even if you are trying to pick up the game, do you need that many balls (purchasing by the dozens)? LOL

Here is a funny lacrosse ball story.
Lacrosse has really gotten big around Houston over the past five years or so. I think a couple of the private schools have lacrosse teams, so some of the bigger sporting goods stores carry lacrosse balls, etc. There's one sporting goods store in particular, Barcelona Sporting Goods, that handles team sports, in particular, baseball and lacrosse. I was looking for a green lacrosse ball, which is actually legal according to NCAA specs, but that's beside the point. I wanted a large green ball for a giant shell game routine. I also wanted some training baseballs in various sizes. So I went into the store, where I was greeted by a "helper," who was dressed in a baseball uniform. "May I help you?" "I'm just looking around. I want to see what you have in stock." "We have everything." "Just let me look please." "What sport do you play?" "I don't play any sports. I'm not looking for anything to use in sports. I need sporting goods for other purposes." "Like what?" "Just let me look. When I have seen what you stock, then I'll ask you some questions." A few minutes later, after seeing that they had none of the smaller baseballs and only white lacrosse balls, with the exception of some stick and ball sets with a green ball, I asked the same fellow, who had been tailing me, like I was casing the joint a couple of questions. "Do you have any 8 1/2", 8", or 7 1/2" baseballs?" "Those aren't legal for play." "They are training baseballs." "They aren't legal for play." "I thought you had everything in stock. Academy has 8" baseballs and 7 1/2" baseballs." "Those aren't legal for play." "I'm not going to use them for play. I'm a magician. I need these for a trick." "Those aren't legal for play." "What about green lacrosse balls, like that one over there? Do you have any of those for sale by themselves?" "Those aren't legal for play." "Check your rules. For a store that stocks everything, you sure don't have much of what I need."
