So, I've noticed a lot of people revealing how tricks are done on YouTube. How risky is it to perform a trick that someone has spoiled online? It hasn't bothered me too much that kids are revealing tricks on YouTube because most of the tricks are more basic things. I have been thinking about getting Healed and Sealed and noticed a video on YouTube claiming to reveal the trick. Already knowing how the trick works, I checked to see if the kid really gave away the secret and he did. I was pretty upset that someone would give it away. So, back to my question; how risky is it to perform something that kids on YouTube give away for free?

If you are performing TO kids who are interested in tricks and are heavy users of youtube/myspace etc, then you may have a problem. With the rest of the world, not so much.
Take Sinful for example - there are many videos of this done badly (some done well, also), together with several exposure videos. In my experience though it has always gone down great ... |

Magic in youtube has been a nightmare for us from many time ago. What we can do? NOTHING! Maybe an out its concentrate more on showmanship, performance and construction of our routines, but exposure comes to stay. I read an interview of Uri Geller and he said if he would start his career now his success would not have lasted 24 hours. Internet give FULL ACCESS FOR ANY INFORMATION, so... Focus on your presentation but the exposure...IS IN THE HOUSE!
This is not the best moment for magic, Hansel!

What about giving something they're not looking for? E.g. instead of doing a M*****ry f**d face up in paperclipped, do it face down. Or constantly mix in tricks, so that it's not a standalone trick anymore, but a combination of 2-3 of them at once.

I think people (mostly Kids, but not all of them are) revealing tricks on youtube is a shame.
The best about the few tricks I have learned so far is to present them to others, work on the presentation and to be smilingly saying nothing when the astonished faces ask: "OMG, How'd you do that?" But next to those revealing videos, youtube also has a good side, as you can watch thousands of videos of tricks not revealed, but performed by great magicians. |

These are all good comments except for the dead horse one. Just kidding, I know its been discussed...
Hansel, you're right. I think that perfecting our showmanship and routines is a great way to sort of battle exposure. Sure people may know how certain things are done, but if a magician is great, it doesn't matter as much. Homegrown, that's a great idea to mix up tricks. I actually do this quite a bit with my card routine. Quote:

Hey, the horse twitched, so I got my stick...
Have any of you actually run into a problem with it? I've only been in the game for two years, but I have yet to have someone say, 'Oh yeah, I saw that on youtube'. In fact, the only one who ever said he checked out a trick online, did so because he legitimately wanted to learn card magic. He's now been at it for about a year and got really good really fast! I wonder if the 'problem' is more perceived than we realize. That's my 2 bits. |

I think the people that see these clips are very, very few compared to the general population. Mix up your tricks, come up with new and interesting routines. Focus more on entertaining than just fooling someone with a trick. And when you do come upon the ocassional as****e that saw how the trick works on TV or youtube, just ignore them and go on with your routine. Be an entertainer, not a trick doer.

NedTMWB, I actually haven't had that problem yet. I was just thinking ahead to if I do. I hope I don't!

One thing I have noticed about the tricks that are exposed on youtube is that they all have either been shown on TV or they are tricks that are sold on the magic market as a stand alone (ie. healed and sealed). Perhaps if you are worried about it, you should watch more dvds and above all read more books. You don't see many things exposed that is found in a book.

Good idea Shane. I'm getting ready to start on AoA book 1 today, so hopefully that's something that people haven't revealed on YouTube!

It is a good opportunity to try thinking outside the box and create a variation that will throw people off even if they have seen the secret on youtube. It is a shame, but as mentioned by Hansel, work on presentation and on variation.

Someone can expose every method. They can't build my presentation.? Do they have my imagination? No Do they have yours? ....... Presentation is so much more important Quote from "The Illusionist" - "That would be one way of doing it" You must control the situation to use that line

Good posts David and Vick. I will really work on my presentation of any tricks that are exposed on YouTube. I don't do much that can be found on YouTube, but maybe now I won't be as afraid to perform something that has been exposed.

I like the fact that they are posted on youtube since some of them I can't understand just by reading the "how it works" that comes with the F/x, and at the same time...how many people are really gonna remember what you did and look it up on youtube to figure out how its done? Most people that I perform for just like the mystery

I recently performed an effect for someone and they asked me how I did it. When I refused to divulge the secret, they stated matter of factly "well I will just look it up on youtube then". This gave me an opportunity. I didn't come back with some smug response like some people suggest. Instead I opened a dialog about WHY there is secrecy in magic. One of the main points I hit was the simple "would you rather know that I simply fooled you, or do you want to look it up on youtube and see how badly you were fooled by something extremely simple." I explained that I didn't keep the secret so that I could feel more important, but so that he didn't feel dumb because I fooled him. This is an extreme paraphrase of the conversation. But talking to people like they are people will earn you a lot in life.
