I'm sure it's a case of independent reinvention but this has some similarities with my Branded Card 3 effect which I first published in 1997 and republished in my MAGIC magazine column a couple of years ago.

Bro: Congratulations on one of the best magic Video Demo's yet. (Everything was clear as to what happens.)
I'm going to buy this just because of the clarity. It let me see that it is something I can use. I also love that moment that is created and the reaction. I smiled myself as I thought of the initials that were significant to me when I watched this. I can imagine myself performing this. It takes away the challenge type of effect and makes the spectator part of the effect. For those of you that really like this type of effect and don't have the True Astonishments set yet, you get 9 DVDs full of effects that create moments like this. ACE

Whether it is offensive to you or your spectators the bottom line is it has the possibility to offend people. If you are behind the bar then you probably have no worries. BUT This effect could have played great in a classy restaurant or a family restaurant had the jokers been less risque. A slight difference in the presentation and this effect could have been suitable for any age. However, the jokers I believe do have a high likelihood to offend people. I live in the Bible belt. I agree, I wonder why they didn't use a different theme with the jokers. I live in an area where these sort of things could very easily be offensive. Not worth the risk.

Bro lives in Roberts Creek, which is primarily old hippies and swingers...almost half of the town is clothing optional the jokers were made from two waitreses at the local strip club (twins)
Unless you only perform shows in strip bars or a show with "adult content" I would steer well clear of this trick. ps: You can also get a girl pregnent by kissing in your baithing suit. couldn't resist, respectfully AG
Well then...

The Jokers remind me a lot of some of the old Antique signs that my uncle collects for his Restaurant. I have placed and order, and will be interested to see how they are in the mmm... flesh.
While I won't be performing the effect for a Children's Sermon, I do think with the right presentation, you can make the Joker's a non-offensive oddity. Reminds me a little bit of Tora Tora art on the side of a plane. RevJohn |

I love the Jokers! They do have an antique or art deco quality. I'd say that this is perfectly fine for just about everyone. It *is* 2009.

I bet, if you showed this to someone and they were offended by the jokers, if you could take a peek inside their mind you'd find some HORRIFIC things they are thinking/desire.
I find the more prudish and judgmental folks are...the darker their secrets.

I've got this on order as well. I'm a big fan of Deep Astonishment 2 -- so I'm hoping this is a more compact but equally effective illusion. I'll certainly chime in when this arrives in my mailbox. I placed the order last week, so I'm hoping it'll be here today or tomorrow.
In terms of being offended by the jokers? Actually, I find that hard to believe. In fact, in my performances of Deep Astonishment 2 -- I've had people be completely weirded out by the effect -- and in one case, someone was clearly, visibly disturbed. So I suspect if folks are actually offended by the jokers, they'll be far more offended by the surreal nature of the revelation. |

Initial Impressions:
Package comes with a DVD, red bicycle deck, and "Bro Notes" on some interesting handling options. DVD is very nice. Shows two distinct handlings -- the basic and the advanced (plus some background on the technologies involved.) I prefer the advanced handling -- seems very natural. A bit of practice required -- but not much. The basic handling, on the other hand, is fairly simple, but it doesn't seem as natural to me. Effect is very straightforward -- and very powerful. Less complex (IMHO) than Deep Astonishment Two but equally effective. The revelation is just as eerie. DVD shows the background of the deck, the handlings, good tips for potentially difficult situations, and an awesome bonus trick. I'm thrilled. Deep 3 is exactly what I expected -- and I expect it (after a bit of practice) to play very well in small, close environments. Is it difficult? A bit of work for the advanced handling -- memory work, perhaps, and some concentration -- but no difficult sleights. No weird angles. Everything is straightforward. What you see is what you get. A great, ingenious effect. And for those folks concerned about the jokers. Don't be. The jokers are unusual and certainly visual but I wouldn't exactly call them racy. No worries. The only item you'll need (and that's not included) is a good, thick Sharpie. But you use the Sharpie only once, and then the deck is good to go. |

Review Deep 3:
As boinko stated you get a Red bicycle deck, Bro notes, and a DVD with a Basic Handling, Advanced Handling, and a cool extra bonus effect. Dvd is very well produced, and initial reactions is that I'm impressed. I will be using this! Deep Astonishment 1 was my favorite effect, and always got a great reaction....well Deep 3 allows you to combine parts of Deep 1 and 2. I highly recommend this to anyone. Alex

Hi all, just wanted to relay some info in response to Anthony Owens post a few back. I have been in contact with Anthony and had a chance to look at his routines, they are great by the way. Although deep 3 is very different in presentation, handling, mechanics, design, pacing etc. there is a core principal at play here in one phase of deep 3 that when stripped to the bone is something that Anthony had already dreamt up. Even though our routines were created independently an ocean apart I think it is important as far as lineage to honor and give respect to Anthony for having first published the concept of a using "cover cards to conceal a hidden index" in collaboration with magician Paul Andrews with an effect called Birthday Deck in 1995. As well in 1997 an effect called "branded card" using similar technology to "birthday deck" were as stated above was republished in his magic magazine column in Feb 07. I want to thank Anthony who has been a true gentleman in this matter and now that I've started looking at his creative work would like to recommend that everyone has a look at anything with his name attached to it!
