I just found/joined the Café last week, and what a gem this place is!
I am just getting back into magic after a long absense. I have always loved the art and dabbled w/ it going up and into high school. I am 33 now, and the 'magic' bug has bite again. I want to purchase a DVD that teaches sleights. (I travel alot during the week, so I don't have access to a VCR) I'd prefer something that is geared more towards cards, as opposed to coins. I am hoping to find something that is Beginner-Intermed level. Sometime that is not too advanced for where I am right now, but something that will hold a perm. place in my library, and that I will continue to find useful as my skills improve. In the short time I have been here, I already appreciate the vast wealth of 'real' knowledge that exists here. (As opposed to several other forums I found that appear to be largely made up of 'kids' posting requests for how trick X is done, or bashing other members/magicians) I really appreciate your help, and thank you for taking the time to share your insights!

Hi FZandura.
Glad that you like it here at the Magic Café. I agree with you, this is indeed a wonderful place with a vast wealth of knowledge from which to glean from. You will find that your stay here will be extremely fruitful & enjoyable. With regards to your question, I could suggest some DVDs which have been highly recommended by many magicians from this forum: You could try Daryl's "Encyclopedia of Card Sleights" (8 DVD set), which pretty much covers most sleights for beginner-intermediate level. This is a comprehensive resource which you will find yourself referring to many years down the road. You may also want to try "Basic Card Technique" (single DVD) by Richard Kaufman which recently was released in DVD format. Just to add: This topic may have been discussed quite a number of times here in the Magic Café, so you may want to try searching for similar-themed threads to obtain much more information. I'm sure that it will help you tremendously. All the best! |

I agree with all the above posts, and to add my favorite, Bill Malone's On the Loose series. These are routines, but contained within the routines are quite a few of the sleights you will find in almost any DVD or book, plus you get the benefit of watching Bill perform! Highly, highly recommended.

I know everyone's going to jump at me for saying this, but if your a beginner, get Inside Magic By Ellusionist. I am actually selling my DVD, but, any-hoo I suggest that if you are serious about cards get Daryl's EOCS, and/or ellusionist's Ninja-1 and Ninja-2. PM me for more info on how to get a good deal on these. I liked Jay Sankey's 45 too, and his REAL MAGIC is great for beginners, I would recommend getting Art of Astonishment, and Art of Astonishment 2 as books. Again, if you are interested in any of these, PM me or E-mail me and I'll either get you a half/off deal, or a 10% off deal, I have connections with some of the online stores, and I really like helping beginners jump into the art head-first!
I can probably get you a good deal on a cups, and balls set too, you know, Houdini once said "no man can consider himself a magician unless he can accurately perform the cups and balls.
"The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of true art and true science. He who does not know it and can no longer wonder, is as good as dead, and his eyes are dimmed." Einstein

I bought a set of Daryl's Encyclopedia of Card Sleights DVDs and it is easily the best Magic Investment I've made.
My review for this series is HERE![outdated link] :bluebikes:

Welcome back to magic FZandura!
To create a foundation that you'll build on, as opposed to only learning effects, I agree with the recommendation of Daryl's Encyclopedia of Card Sleights, Volumes 1-8. Unless you encounter a special price break for all the volumes, I'd resist buying all eight at one time. The reason? It's easy to become overwhelmed with the amount of material and techniques to learn. One thought about the Magic Café; as you return on a regular basis, you'll find yourself repeatedly coming back to the same forums. Do yourself a favor, everytime you come into the Café, go into at least one new site. You'll be amazed at the diversity and the knowledge you'll encounter. You'll also find The Café a wealth of information, especially when you go through the "search" mode. If you can think of the question/topic, it's probably already been posted at The Café. Enjoy this crazy, fun, rewarding, art form, time eating, money draining, difficult to explain, impossible to completely satisfy experience we all call, "magic". |

Thanks, I just ordered Daryl's Encyclopedia of Card Sleights Vol. 1, to start off with. I'll post my feedback after I receive it and have a chance to go through it a couple times. Any other wisdom or advise is always appreciated!

I vote for Jay Sankey's 45 for some unique slights that go beyond cards and of course Daryl's Encyclopedia of card sleights. By the way Indy Ron is right when he says that it is asy to get overwhelmed if you buy all Of ECS 1-8. Buy the first one and absorb it then move on.
