I was watching some old DVDs and thinking about street magic and realized that I loved it when Criss Angel started rising to popularity and he seemed to have a game of "one upsmanship" with David blaine. Both are phenomanal street magicians and I loved when blaine returned. I searched his website and couldn;t find much but was wondering is anyone has heard an recent David Blaine news?Any new stuns or projects in the works? Same question for Criss Angel as I couldn't find much and was wondering if anyone has heard anything. When it comes to street magic although both are really good magicians I prefer blaine better as I think his presentational skills are better. Actually Im not sure if skills isn't the right word I am trying to convey I am thinking more along the lines of style/ Not to discount Criss at all he is awesome as well. Anyways has anyone heard anything?
Thanks,

Wrong forum, mate. This is where we discuss real street performing and magic, not "TV street magic"...

Exactly, neither one is a street magician. There was another thread somewhere where someone actually mentioned these 2 guys in the same sentence as Gazzo. Evidently, he didn't know what real street magic is.

Since I have yet to see a either one of them perform without 30 stooges and dozens of re-takes, I can't offer my opinion as to which one is a better busker.
Here would be a good contest: Let's parachute them into Bulgaria with nothing but the clothes on their back, a TT and a deck of cards. That's it. No money, no phone, no food, no sleeping arrangements. Not even a passport. Totally and completely stranded. And the first one to hit 6 European capitals and make it back to LAX wins. Hey, a guy can dream, can't he? LOL |

Oop, Chrusa, you can see that we regard David Blaine and Criss Angel as TV show presenters, not street magicians.
Try http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewf......92&23921 for some other views on the two.
The presentation makes the magic.

It's about time they learned some real magic

Hmm, I'm not sure how David Blaine doing magic on the street doesn't qualify to you guys as "street magic." Sure, there are certain effects that he may use "camera tricks" on, but for the most part, DB's street magic is just that...STREET MAGIC. He is doing tricks that you or I can purchase from any reputable magic store...under the "STREET MAGIC" category. DB and CA have done a LOT for magic and yes, sometimes they are corny (CA especially); but they are both fantastic magicians. I agree that CA's effects are more like stage illusions presented outside. But DB...come on. His "banner effects" like buried alive or dive of death are not characterized as street magic, I agree. But the rest of the TV show is centered exclusively on his street magic, so cut him some slack!

Street magicians draw and hold a crowd through audacity and charisma and get paid from the audience when they enjoy the show.
The guys that show up with a film crew and extras and say "wanna see a trick" are not street magicians. They are TV personalities filming take after take on the street to get some good reaction shots and make a show that looks spontaneous. Smartly they use the "street magic" idea as a form of presentation. Many magicians admire true street magicians more, but the general public might have more respect for tv presenters. Either way, facts are facts and there's no reason to cut any millionaire broadcasters some slack. |
