I am interested in purchasing a really good set of linking rings with a matching locking key ring. Any suggestions as to the brand and where to buy? Are 10" or 12" rings more popular for stage now? I heard Owens can custom make a nice set, but I haven't looked into it yet. Any suggestions to start me off on the right track?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Joe Porper. I have been using his rings for years. In my opinion they are the best.

Hey Christopher!

The Porper and Owens rings are both very nice, but you're going to have to pay a premium price for a premium product. IMO, the cheaper versions really aren't worth it, including the Tannen's and Klamm locking keys.

As far as size goes, in my experience, some moves are easier with the bigger rings, but some are more unwieldy. So it depends on your routine.

I use the Owen 12 inch rings for a 6 ring routine. The locking key is very good but I never use it in performance. I bought it thinking I needed it but it's really not necessary.

I use the PROLine 15" Rings. IMO, they're very close to the quality of the Owen Rings and at a FRACTION of the cost! To see them, go to my website (listed in my sig) and watch the photo anamation on my main page. I think it's the 3rd or 4th image that blows across the screen.

If your criteria of "good" is how invisible the key is, the look into a set of the Tannen "Super Locking Rings". It has a magnetic key, and the gaff is hard to see from a foot away.

I don't think they are being manufactured now, but I found a used set on the Café.

I use the same gaff only my gimmick is more invisible due to the high polish shine.

Hey Pete!

Joe's "Key" looks similar to the one I bought from Klamm back in '85 at the Boston SAM convention, for like $25. Are they in collaboration or is it merely independent thinking?

Cheers! Smile

Probably "independant" thinking. Joe tries to never make anything that someone else does. He has a new locker that open when you hit the rings together in a certain way.

As you all know the weight of the rings is important to most of us. Generally the locking keys are made of a metal which may not match the weight of the other rings. Joe Porper, properly advised, made locking keys for rings which have IMHO the ideal weight.

Like Pete Biro I did play a bit with them at the WMS, they are great and the locking key system is really perfectly deceptive and perfectly convenient.
