I was watching the tv show "Master is Illustions" the other night and I saw a whistle that you hide in your mouth. He would run his finger around a rim of a glass and with the whistle be had the glass really sing. He said, that many years ago you could buy it in the back of a comic book. Does anyone know the name of this whistle?
thanks, Jeff |

I remember it. I think it was just called an "instrument." I actually bought one, answering an ad from "Honor House" in the back of a comic book. Mostly it was just a little whistle about the size of a vitamin capsule. Almost like what you'd dig out of a squeak toy.
It came with a tiny little pamphlet about three or four inches square with, perhaps, six pages (That's what I remember, anyway). The ad and the pamphlet had the same illustration (I think). It was a guy carrying a trunk on his back. Voices were coming from the trunk: "Help me!" ...and a little boy was watching in awe. The little whistle wasn't much good for what it said it was good for. But you could make a whistling sound with it! |

Copperfield used one of these in one of his specials long ago. I don't know where, or even if you can get them now. I wonder if the little pitchpipe would work? You can get pitchpipes tat are about an inch long. They are available in different keys. Whatever you try, be careful, and do not swallow!

Birdy is the best brand of warbler out there. Many of the others are made of paper and fall apart.
Copperfield did not use a warbler. It was for a balloon routine and the gaff was something different. It is on that LaRock page. Through the years the Swiss Warblers were called a number of things including Ventrilo and the Voice Thrower. |

These used to be one of the free prizes in Cracker Jacks when I was a kid. I can't believe people would pay $12 for this thing ! I have seen them at music stores on the counter by the cash register for $1...

I haven't done a scientific experiment, but the Ederna Swiss Warbler is just about as good as the Birdy and much less expensive. You may want to check out http://newplanetmagic.com for price comparisons.
