I like Pete Biro's favorite quote and it goes something like this ... there are no rules, just play with the cups enough and you'll develop something from your effort.

You beat me to it.
Posted: Apr 2, 2009 4:03pm Not that this is any good, but the cups are different. btw a you tube search for cubiletes brought up some different stuff for cups and balls. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROLHOt33nvE http://www.themagicworkshop.com carries all of Antonio's stuff (but doesn't list the DVD, titled, "The Transparent Cups" and also listed as "Los Cubiletes Transparentes". give 'em a try.

You might want to try quicksearching this question, as you might be more likely to find the answers you're looking for.
With all due respect to Mr. Biro and Mr. Tong (and Mr. Gunn, should he respond), my opinion is that if you're completely new to C&B and try to develop basic skills or a routine out of no knowledge whatsoever, you'll probably give up before anything happens and never touch a cup again in your life. I've used this analogy here before, but it would be like trying to learn to play the guitar with no absolutely no instruction at all, formal or otherwise. I'm a teacher by day, so maybe I'm a little biased. In my experience, the Michael Ammar Complete Cups and Balls DVDs are an excellent place to start. Lots of information there. The Mark Wilson Complete Course in Magic also has a great bare bones routine, and was the first that I learned. If you're really serious about getting deep into cups, I would suggest learning some basic skills from these sources and then crafting your own routine from what you've learned. There are a million magicians out there doing carbon copies of the Ammar/Vernon/Gazzo routines, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but if you're working professionally, you'll likely run into quite a few audiences who have seen these routines before. Be creative! Try and put your routine into some relevant context; if you're going to show them lemons, you oughtta have a good reason! Good luck! EDIT: I started typing this post long before your last two posts, Pete. All apologies! |

If you are completely NEW... that's a different question. Then my suggestion is to try to find a magic club and meet with members and see if any of them do any work with cups and balls. They may not be great workers, but will get you started so you know the basics. Then I would suggest watching several versions on http://www.youtube.com and see what kind of routines inspire you.
At first, keep it simple. Then start to experiment. Avoid becoming a clone of someone else's work. BTW, Romero's routine took him YEARS to develop. Funny, one of the principles in his routine is something I fiddled with about 30 years ago, but didn't carry it to anything that I wound up using.

Ethan,
Thanks for the advice. My intention is to learn ideas from the masters and then develop my own. Just looking to get a primer on basic moves and flow. Pete, Thanks for all the advice. |

Defiance II has an imaginative loading sequence, but there is quite a bit of confusion in the middle. It is definitely NOT a beginner's routine.

Knowing the history of the cups and balls may seem to be of no use at all; however, once you understand how the old cup workers stood, gestured and entertained, you begin to understand the part of the cups and balls that mere sleight of hand does not cover.

The best routine I ever saw was done by Harry Riser. His routine is written up in, "The Feints and Temps of Harry Riser".
I don't think it would be a good place to start, necessarily. I think I would start with a one cup routine. Much of the mechanics are simplified and focusing on getting to the denouement without getting busted by an audience would be easier. Best chop cup book, in my book, is available VERY inexpensively from Ron Bauer. Oh, his book, "Basic Cups & Balls Technique" is also a real find. I really would start with Ron's books if you want a complete package to bring up to speed. All the stuff about Ammar's books/DVDs is true. For a single source of information that will keep you busy for a very long time, Ammar's material has few competitors. Oh, yeah, Be original! (But first get some solid chops on the work in print!) |

Please have a look at John Mendoza's CB routine. My mentor gave me a manuscript many many years ago. I remember learning it with no cups. I think it was well written. By the time I had my combo set, I was doing the routine like it was second nature to me. I am not sure where you can get hold of this manuscript. Perhapsill or Pete can help. This has been the backbone of my CB routines. The choreography is just beautiful.
