I have always been bothered by the fact that with mis-made that the numbers on the bill don't match, however Max has solved this issue with his version of this effect.
I am thrilled by the fact that I can hand out the bill for examanation In it's mismade form or any other time and the numbers match. People swear it's the same bill, because the serial numbers match throughout the entire effect. There is no logical explanation for what they just witnessed, I am getting far stronger reactions with Max's version of this effect, than the original. I never thought such a simple adgustment would make such a strong difference. You have to see the video; http://www.innovativedeceptions.com/id_ultimate_mis.htm I love mine, worth every penny!!!!!!!!! |

Aren't the numbers sequential on a sheet of bills? If they are, you can just erase the last number.

I can't imagine erasing the last digit would make much difference to any normal person watching this trick. The surprise is the change - I don't think anyone in their right mind believes its the same bill - they're surprised by the magical change and the intriguing idea of the bill being turned inside out. Howard Lyons invented this idea, right?

What I mean is if you buy a sheet of one dollar bills from the mint they should have sequential serial numbers. So if you erase the last digits on all of the bills on the sheet they'll all have the same serial number. You could make some mismade bills out of a portion of the sheet and cut the rest normally. So you end up with some regular bills and some mismade bills, all with the same serial number. I could be wrong though but for some reason I thought the #s were sequential on a sheet.

Without commenting on the need for, cost of, or value of the product:
For the benefit of anyone wishing to learn how to do the bill switch well, the demoed technique on that website is the worst bill switch I've seen in the twenty-five years I've been aware of the sleight. In other words, if you know someone who has been wanting to learn to do a switch, tell them "For the love of all that is magic, please don't do it that way!" Now back to the need for, cost of, or value of the product...............
Like Bonnie Raitt said, "I miss Little Feat more than I miss being 8 years old." Thanks for the concerts + recordings, Lowell, Richie, and Paul!

Ixnay,
Actually the serial numbers are different in the center of the group of digits making it difficult to work that out. You would be left with a huge gap in the center of the serial number. I am happy with what Max has done with the bills they are custom made, and even if you bought sheets, all the effort would not really save you any money and you'll still have to redo numbers in the middle, making it difficult to replace them, so it would not look quite right. Steve, While you are entitled to your opinion on the bill switch I think you should stay focused on the effect itself. I have seen far worse than that video. The video was made to show the bills themselves and not the effect. However, maybe you should PM Max your feelings on the switch. After all, I think time would be better served doing this in private. Krazyjay, I received a custom mismade bill and a matching bill so they match perfectly. They are made by hand. There are no instructions explaining the mismade as those who have this already have a method to do the necessary moves. However the gimmicks look fantastic! Best, Renzo |

John Lovick made the point in SWITCH that there are many small points which make bill switches such as Klause's more (or less) deceptive. In this case, I really do want those who need to be told that this video has the worst demostration of a bill switch I've ever seen, so that they don't emulate it or think that it's ok for them to perform it so poorly. Again, the product / service Max offers is a different issue, the value of which is concurrently being reviewed/debated here. Steve

When I got home I checked my mismade bills that I cute from a sheet and Steve is right. The first two numbers are the same but the middle numbers are different.

Wow just ran across this post about Max new gimmicked bills. I am a bit shocked, first let me say, Max has always been a true professional to deal with, he has made some custom stuff for myself that I find to be the best quality out there.
With that said, I never once thought his video was to teach anyone how to do the switch. That is ridiculous to think that. It would be like saying Steve your web site is to show you how a professional web site should look. The fact is, not everyone will buy this, and here is why. One, not everyone will want the subtly of this effect, but the true professional working for a living may. I have always felt that Max creates his effects for the working pro./ I simply like the subtly and to tell you the truth, I hope no one buys it so I can be the only one to use such a gimmick. --Floyd
No one said it would be easy, or did they?

This seems like a big waist of money. How can they justify the price. I don't see how you benefit from matching serial numbers. I do this, I borrow a bill and do the money morph bill switch. No one has notice the serial numbers. What they see is you borrowing a bill and morphing it. I don't want them to see me take out a dollar bill out of my wallet and morph it. I also think the bill switch on the video looks like crap. Just my two cents.

Sounds like there really is no point in this (I could be wrong) but would I get a stronger reaction and would the spectators notice? I am not sure how much stronger the reaction will be if I had the money to purchase it I would buy it and review it here on the Café but don't have the money
Thanks,

I have performed this effect on and off at tableside and stand-up for many years.I cannot remember ever having a guest bring up SN's.
That said,I remember seeing the very talented Paul Gertner performing MisMade Bill with matching SN's on National TV[he had the host select a $50 bill from a stack of fifties, and then he did the change. It was very powerful in this formal situation...and seemed quite impossible. My point is...do not dismiss a methodology so quickly, for under the right circumstances that methodology can be 'pure gold'. Rich |

I think the best effect is with a borrowed bill.

Rich is absolutely right about there being right situations for the SN subtelty. Like I've said about Max's Ultimate Missmade Bill, if you're doing walk around, this would probably be overkill for you. There's no real point in it plus you're probably not going to make a 5 minute performance piece out of the mismade bill. In parlour and stage performances however, you are DEFINITELY offered a oppertunity to draw out the routine and make it into a real performance piece. THIS is where something like the SN subtlety comes into play very well because you can perform the routine quite slowly and deliberately, giving your audience ample time to soak in the magic and really think about the whole routine, in such a situation, having the SN subtlety builds that ever elusive wall that the audience will not be able to get past thus creating a truly powerful and ultimately impossible effect.

Who would do this trick on stage and have someone come up to check the serial number? If I wanted to impress the same bill idea to a bigger group I'd go with a torn corner.

I never draw attention to the serial number when doing the bill switch. But once in a while I'll have somebody really smart point out the fact that the serial numbers don't match on the two corners.
I work a lot of university functions (professors and students) and this is usually where attention to such detail is noticed and it always bugs me. The SN subtlety is probably overkill for most audiences, but it's nice to know that somebody has gone out of the way to offer such a cool option for the magic community. With all due respect, for anybody to say that nobody ever notices the serial number discrepancy, then I say that maybe folks are noticing and just being polite by not calling it out. Or perhaps MOST people don't pay attention to such minor things; but even if a small percentage do, are you content with those results? I like an idea that I read from Michael Close once where he mentioned that he likes to tailor his magic for the smartest audiences. If they are fooled, then the average spectators have no chance. I also remember Dean Dill saying that spectators often see more than they let on and that a lot of magicians don't give them enough credit. I agree. |
