I have bit torrent and was on there looking for some episodes of TV shows I used to watch back in the early 80s and on the main page the have the latest torrents that have been uploaded and I see Paul Harris True Astonishments. Well this got me because it is $300. Now usually I thought pirated magic was done by kids, and people who weren't pros, and too cheap to buy stuff, but this $300 set told me that someone who had the money uploaded it.
I think there might be people on the web, magic message boards, here maybe, that come to places such as this ,and cry ethics, and what not, and talk about doing things right, but when no one is looking go and pirate magic, and download stuff for free anyways. I mean some 15 year old kid didn't probably have the $300 to upload this. This set has been waited for by magicians for a while, and has been talked about so much mainly by people who should know the difference between right and wrong. I am sure there wasn't as much buzz over on the Ellusionist type forums. So someone who knows what the right thing to do is might be the same person who uploaded this. It does cost a lot of money and whoever uploaded it should have to know the difference between right and wrong. Second part of this post is I hang out in the magic shop a lot, and you get some good advice, but you also get the kids in there as well. Well this kid comes in and is like, "You don't need to purchase half this stuff, check out this site." The kid showed us, we ended up having a big discussion, and some of the older magi were trying to tell the kid why it is good to purchase magic, and support the creator. The kid ended up agreeing, but you can tell it was a young kid agreeing to get the guys off his back. He pretended to agree, but when he goes home, he will still probably go and rip off tons of stuff. Now I saw this exposure site with tons of stuff on it, and some DVDs, and books, that are even more then $300. I saw some inexpensive stuff, some exclusive stuff, some out of print. Some of the stuff I saw had to have been uploaded by someone who knows the difference between right and wrong, and has had to have been into magic for a while. Some of this stuff is just the kind of stuff that only pros would own. This isn't the kind of stuff a 13 year old kid can go, and buy, and upload. Some of this stuff was out of print for a while, limited edition, etc. I then saw a link to a video that was an instructional video that is for sale on someone's website that is a member at the Café. The person who designed this effect really sells stuff only on their web site, not at major shops, etc. The designer of this effect is really on the Café, and that's it, they aren't on many other magic forums. Point is that someone here who reads the Café had to go to this designers site, purcahse the effect, then upload it to be pirated. I think we need to be careful, because secretly there might be "wolves in the flock," if you will. The other thing I saw was an effect that was offered free to Café members in the Secret Sessions forum; well this was on the pirate site. I also saw an effect that I think was posted about on the Café a while ago. It was an effect that was being asked to be reviewed. I think the creator decided not to release it yet, but I think I saw it on this site with downloadable magic. My point is be careful when posting stuff here, or sending out review stuff, as you don't know exactly who is sneaking around here. I get the feeling, and was wondering if anyone else does, that sometimes people might act like the "perfect person with ethics, and the perfect magician." But when no one is looking, that these same people are like **** every one else, I can do what I want to do and download pirated stuff and people don't know, and I have a good reputation, and want to maintain it on the Café, or other magic forums, or other magic clubs, or shops, but I still am going to be sneaky, and greedy, and not have integrity. Anyone have examples, or feel this way?
Thanks,
