Many of you will have seen this before but some of you might enjoy this for the first time...

I really enjoy this routine. I used to do it ages ago...and I never really knew where it came from. I think someone taught it to me during my brief stint as the counter magician at our local (now long gone) magic shop. My presentation wasn't nearly as friendly, and I never liked the idea of making the mark feel stupid. It's really great to see how it was supposed to be done. I don't think my mutant version was nearly as effective.
Good stuff! |

I had not seen that clip. It's the best one for sure. Too bad there isn't on of Ken Brooke or Paul Daniels online. The combined it with the "electric chair."

Pete,
I agree. I have to say that Paul Daniels Chop Cup and Electric Chairs are among my most favourite magic routines ever. Let's not forget that enchanting presentation of the linking rings he did with the little girl name Blue too Bri |

Slydini is the master of this trick. Anyone seen this trick done even remotely as well since this film was made?

Wonderful!
Watching this, the audience member didn't seem like a "victim". Hard to pull off, that.

The setup on this is the key. If you stress to the audience that the person will be experiencing something that, to the volunteer, is very magical, and that they should not "break the spell," the volunteer does not look like a victim, and you don't look like a victimiser!

Slydini's speech and gestures are disarming, some would think how is this little foreign man gonig to fool me?

Mumford. Yes, Ken Brooke and Paul Daniels. And ONCE "ME" WHEN a seargant in the army "commanded me to fool him." I did, and my reward? Next day kitchen duty peeling potatoes. Oh well, the 200 other guys in the outfit loved seeing me make a fool of the idiot.

Though I posted this last month on a different page and topic, Steve Spill's version of this trick is absolutely one of the best I've ever seen. I saw his show for the first time at Magicopolis several weeks ago and this was one of the highlights of the night(not to downplay the other effects, but this really is a winner). There is a wonderful reparte with Steve and his assistant who is "helping" with the effect on the audience member seated on stage. I don't really want to give away the bit, but really some funny moments and a lesson in how a very old, and what I considered a bit mean-spirited trick, can be made into a comedy effect NOT at the expense of the spectator on stage.

I'm planning a visit to the Magicopolis show. I heard the evening and matinees shows are different which one did you see that had Slydini's paper balls?

It was the evening show but Steve posts every once in awhile so maybe he could inform us, because I'm not exactly sure if the BOH routine is in both or not.

Spill only does paper balls in the evening performances, his version has several layers of wit and subtext besides the physical trick part. Slydini would be proud. I agree with Brewer, like a lot of his well honed pieces, this routine is pure dynamite.

Is it the same rendition of the PB that's on his 10 Years DVD?

Not the same, you said you're planning a trip to the show. Be patient, you'll see it for yourself. Tell us what you think.

Pete, to make the spectator feel like an idiot is the very thing people try to avoid when doing this trick. Maybe it was justified in that case, but how did you handle it in others?
Persi Diaconis once suggested to me (how's that for name-dropping) to use a metal tray on the spectator's lap to hold the tissues and at the end make the tray disappear. When the spectator hears the sound of the tray crashing behind them, they turn around and realize what has been going on, and everyone, including the now-enlightened spectator, has a good laugh. |

Saw the PB at Magicopolis last night. Hands down best I've seen anytime, anywhere, ever. Brilliant, Brewer and Miller I'm with you all the way. Everyone else, go see this, and not just for the PB you'll love the rest of the show too.

The clip of Slydini was from Dick Cavett's ABC show. c. 1978?
If you look at the center of the screen in the opening as the sceen is cross fading you will see a young Bill Murray in the audience.

Another way out is to let a bottle of champagne appear, with the audience not seeing it coming. Tell the spectator to keep the secret about how the champagne appeared and not to believe what they tell him, leaving him ignorant of the method for the paper balls but holding something that the rest of the audience doesn't have and got fooled with.
If using this balanced solution, just manage to have the spectator's chair on a low elevated stage so that the rolled up paper balls are not visible from the room when other spectators will try and explain to him how it worked. He'll be able to keep a doubt and the champaign that they will ask him how it was magically produced.
