It's become a tradition to watch Jesus Christ Superstar with my family on Easter weekend. It's still a surprisingly powerful film, 36 years after its release and 38 years after the musical made its stage debut.
And yes, I did get a bit weepy during "I don't know how to love him." Anyone else enjoy Superstar lately? John

No but we ate some nice Tialapia on Friday.
We'll watch 'The Robe' for the hey soose fix...also powerful music by Miklos Rosa and truely amazing performances, especially by Victor Mature as Demetrius and a bravura turn by Jay Robinson as Caligula. (He also hosted 'Beyond Bizarre'). The fabulous cast not only had Richard Burton and Jean Simmons but included Ernest Thesiger (Bride Of Frankenstein), Torin Thatcher (7th Voyage Of Sinbad), Michael Rennie (Day The Earth Stood Still), Jeff Morrow (The Giant Claw) and the film was the official debut of Cinemascope and the best Crack Of Thunder heard (in Stereo) up to that time (1953). Definately in my Top 10.

The Robe! My father always insisted that we watch it when it aired during Easter week. Thanks for stirring some great old memories.

I watch Jesus Christ Superstar on the news every night. He's always giving sound bites at the White House or wherever he is.
It's funny. He talks and the Dow crashes. He's silent and it surges. Gives new meaning to the phrase, "Be still and know that I am God."

I've always loved Superstar. It has always been one of my favorite pieces of theatre. (Which is a little funny, since I'm an atheist.)
There are wonderful, dramatic moments in there--definitely the best work Weber and Rice did together. I particularly love "Can We Start Again, Please", which I think is even more moving than Yvonne Ellman's wonderful "I Don't Know How To Love Him." There was a wonderful British remake a few year's ago that takes that separated from time, anachronistic thing that the original movie had and runs with it, so you start out in modern dress, with the Romans dressed like fascists and Pilate dressed like an SS General. Definitely worth checking out.

Its gotten to the point where I can't stand Yvonne Elliman and that annoying song!
Some friends always watch the Ten Commandments, which to my mind isn't an 'Easter' movie but it was always shown at Easter so there ya go. Sincere best wishes for all my Christian friends for this weekend. |

Yep. I pass over it every year.
Yeah Rimbaud...one thing you gotta give the Christians...the stories make good movies! Also Great Art and terrific music. I always thought while being a non believer, I had the potential to be a closet Catholic. Love the dazzle!

We usually watch The Cincinnati Kid.

I watched JC Superstar last year again and really enjoyed it. A couple years the play was in Cupertino, Ca and Ted ? who is in the movie still is playing Christ on stage. Dennis DeYoung was also in it. Good stuff...

All philosophy aside, (and no disrespect intended to Christians) the story itself makes for incredibly rich drama--the conflict of Judas has so many layers. In Superstar, my favorite moment is when Judas sings "What if I just stayed here and ruined your ambition?!" after Jesus calls him "you liar, you Judas!" I also love Pilate taunting the crowd "You hypocrites! You hate us more than him!" It all has that rich mixture of passion and politics and mysticism...

This is a great musical. Favorite pieces are What's the buzz? and If You are the Christ. Would you believe that Ted Neely is STILL touring with this show at age 65!

I like Superstar, but my favorite to watch on or around Easter is Ben-Hur

I prefer "Godspell." I thought Neely's voice was weak in the film, I don't know what he sounds like now.

We generally watch "A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum" which is as historically factual as Godspell of JCST
