I don't know about the connection to the pirates, but the illegal dumping of toxic waste on Somali shores is an unfortunately old story. Here is one from New Scientist from 1992.

I think we did what we needed to do in this case. But I think it should have been done as soon as we arrived in the area. There was no reason to wait. If we waste the scum bags as soon as we show up on the scene it will also show them that we are not going to mess around at all. This has been going on way too long now and taking out any and all pirates at the start of any take over by the pirates. Yes I truly believe that.

Oh, now I see. Not only did they take the quote out of context, the diary they picked received only a few comments, never even made the "Recommended List", and quickly dropped off the face of the earth. I guess there's a few crazies in every crowd.

Of course, a casual viewer clicking a direct link to that diary from an inflammatory news article probably wouldn't realize it wasn't actually representative of the majority view on the website.

I actually enjoyed reading that article. While it was clearly meant to disparage the bloggers who provided some context for what is happening in this situation, there's absolutely no refutation of any of the information quoted.

But, but, how can that be?

The organization responsible for that expose bills itself as America's Media Watchdog. It wouldn't describe itself that way and represent itself as a Newsbuster if it wasn't, would it? People wouldn't fall for that kind of obvious spin and partisan bias, would they? Would they?

I was wondering why some of the usual suspects were not jumping onto the 'pirates are wonderful' bandwagon then I read that it is the Euros that were doing the dumping. That would take the fun away to go after those wonderful chappies.

I don't think the bandwagon is very full. Despite some lame attempts from "both sides" pretty much everybody equates these pirates with city gangs, with smugglers, with drug dealers and with most other semi-organized thugs out there.
