There is so much to learn in life that it drives me crazy, therefore I hope my cups don't crack.

A lot of this has to do with the thickness of the metal, as well. Thicker brass will require more annealing than thin brass.
If you go to the section of the Museum that has "Making of a cup," you will have some insight as to how this proceeds with a copper cup. Here's the link: http://69.89.31.132/~cupsandb/museum/making.htm

Thank you all for the ideas. I'm investigating the idea of laser repair -- but want to hear from the jeweler who would do the work to see if it could fix things. The instrument repair approach would involve soldering in a lead vs. brass color and so that's out UNLESS I then plated the cups, but then we're talking about the costs of new set Annealing will stop it getting worse, but then the cups sit on the shelf and everytime I look I'd get frustrated!!!
I tried to contact Busby several times, but the voicemail sounds like a dubbing of an FBI informant and given that my various efforts to establish contact have failed I suppose he's got no interest. No judgement on my part, just fact. My final idea is to donate them to the Cups and Balls Museum as an example of what can happen when cups go bad! Bill Palmer, do you have a cabinet for the Island of Mis-made cups?? |

I haven't heard back from my brother on how he does instrument repair, but I seriously doubt he uses lead solder. From pictures I've seen of his workshop it's more of a welding (perhaps "silver soldering")job using a brass rod or appropriately colored silver solder alloy. He then grinds and polishes it so the repair is virtually invisible. Might cost more than the cups are worth though. Most trumpets cost well into the thousands of dollars and the repair is money well spent.

Quote: Yes it is and even if dader did hear from Jeff. Jeff would probably tell him "You have no right to try and fix them. I'm the only one that can do anything with any Paul Fox named item. In fact I'm that only one that can legally use the word Fox." Jeff is a true piece of work.

This may be the first time that I defend Jeff. I understand that he may have had a stroke. If this is true, there is no point in trying to contact him at all.

Not sure if the did or not. About 6 years ago now he posted on the internet that he did have a stroke was in a wheel chair etc... But at that time he was still going at it tooth and nail with anyone that was trying to see any P.F. related items.
I agree if such is the case that he did recently have one then we should stop bashing him and let him be. I do not believe his claim from six years ago one bit however. Randy |

Yesterday, someone I trust told me that he had phoned Jeff, and Jeff's speech was very slurred, as he said something that sounded like "I had a stroke." As long as he leaves me alone and doesn't start agitating my friends, I'll leave him alone. I certainly won't do anything to antagonize him.

I don't know about the stroke and, again, I don't judge him. But the voice message was electronic...like a robot or voice recognition system....So Bill Palmer, any room in the museum for good cups gone bad???

Keep them, and perhaps some day soon, someone will figure out a way to repair them.
