Hello all,
I just did "The Opener" this evening for a Christmas house party that I do every year. Don't laugh, but I WAS in the basement. I got a great reaction. Actually when I did the second phase of the trick, the crowd (about 30 people) was already right there with me. Another funny part was when I would finish other effects in my routine I would get the "Amazing!! & fist pump in the air" reaction. Thanks again Bill for a great effect. Matt |

I was asked to perform in school for a teacher of mine, my class, and another and a few teacehrs for a small Antebellum fair (I'm in AP US History, and Antebellum is the period before the Civil war). I was asked to tie my act back to Antebellum somehow, however subtle or obvious it should be. I opened with my Jumbo Five Card Opener, and all my classmates REALLY enjoyed my/the patter and were so lost (in a good way) at the end. Thunderous applause of course. But one more thing, instead of AMAZING! I had them utter ANTEBELLUM!
Ha! Great stuff. Michael |

Matman,
Great to hear about your success (even in the basement!). Thanks for sharing. The key to the routine is the fact that the audience now has an 'excuse' react to the other effects in your show and they also have an 'outlet' to do so. Michael, I think you have just won the "strangest audience call-back' award. Well done...ANTEBELLUM! Have a great Christmas! Bill http://www.billabbottmagic.com |

So many positive reviews that no one would even dare to say anything against this because we all know how Café works when someone disagrees... Endless flaming against that one person and so on...
That said, for me, after all this hype, this product was a minor disappointment And yes, I am a worker.... The presentation is clever and main point from it could be easily incorporated into any six/five/378 card repeat. It is clearly the strength of the routine and I got two lines out from it. That makes the packet worthwhile to me. However the routine itself is lacking in my opinion... Unlike normal six card repeat that is rather flat, this routine is modular, or it tries to be. Meaning, in this routine, same thing doesn’t happen again and again but it tries to build up. I just feel that with just 3 phases, the modularity isn’t happening enough or the ending is just overkill. The comedy and the amazement from original routines grew from the repeats, similarly to Dan Garrets routine that is now popularized by Michael Close. I showed this routine to two laymen friends of mine, straight from DVD and their reaction was just "Well, he was holding a bunch of cards together". The ending is overkill in my opinion and in a way it exposes, what is already suspected by most spectators... "He must have more cards than he is showing". Some might argue that this is not such a big deal because six card repeat isn’t the most magical effect in the first place. I disagree... With right presentation it can be very magical and it can have strong ending. For example, just see Meir Yedid version with bills. Very magical, easily motivated and has strong ending. Also Michael Finney has great ending and he does the original pretty much like it is published in Mark Wilsons book. Also the advertised ending isn't terribly original and similar things have been used as ending before. For example, the Ted Lesley’s ending was mentioned earlier and it is very similar. The gimmicks itself are very well made. Both the big and small cards are joy to work with and very deceptive. The container however looks little cheap, but I assume that anyone could easily substitute it for their own liking. Also the DVD is very through. There is tons of ways to present this. With table, without table, standing behind stand mike, with headset mike and so on. All that said, the presentation angle and the props make this totally worthwhile purchase, but the routine itself just wasn’t for me and I don’t think that it is the worth of all this hype. Sincerely Juha-Matti |

I will not nor do I wish to flame your post here, but to say that there is hype tied to this effect I feel flaming from you. There is no hype when an effect works and does as it is intended to do. I just completed my Christmas shows this last weekend. I used the five card as an opener for the shows, and the reaction was very good. Not only did the call back come during my sections of the show but also when Dan Harlan was performing the audience shouted out That's Amazing. The routine does as it says it does, and that is gets the audiance going and keeps them going, if your millage is not the same then I truly wounder why not. Asking a few friends to watch the DVD is not going to give you the feedback you need to make a decision on if the effect works or not. Truly its a group audiance thing, and you are bringing them togeather making them all conditioned. You need to put it out there as your opener and then you will see the power of it. The ending is in no way overkill. If you follow the logic of the age and the younger you go the more happens, it makes it very logical that you are building to a climax. Also keep in mind its an Opener!!! Thanks for your prospective on the effect, for me its a keeper. Floyd
No one said it would be easy, or did they?

I, too, have sought good openers for my shows. I have this effect and will be giving it a try next Sunday the 10th. I'll let you all know how it goes.

I actually do not like my bicycle gimmicks at all. I wish I could use them but I can't. They are way too obvious IMO. May be just my set. It's too bad
Also, when it comes to your audience saying your trigger, i.e. THAT'S AMAZING! do you have to trigger them (like saying at the end of your effect "and the crowd cried out in unison...") or do they just say it? I don't rmbr if that was covered in the DVD. |

I've just watched the DVD and had a run-through of the mechanics. This is certainly easy enough technically. But it's the presentation that is pure gold. I feel the true value with this effect is in Bill's fantastic seminar as he explains the effect. He reminded me of several things I could change about my show. In fact, everything Bill discusses is already familiar to me - but even so, I had a minor "Eureka" moment, as I realised that I could be making much more of certain elements already in my show.
As much as an opener, this is a discussion of how to open a show, how to create a "hook", and how to constantly bring your audience back in to the action. You could actually apply Bill's thinking to another effect entirely. Very valuable for any real worker. Potty |

Ok, performed this last Sunday night for the first time. By the 2nd go through, the audience shouted out "amazing" before I ever got to that point in the story. They laughed throughout and at the end gave a really loud "amazing" and a big round of applause. What more could a performer ask for? This is a keeper and gets the audience on your side quickly and for the rest of the show.

OK, so now I've tried this out in various shows. It's played very well, and today, I got a small group of 6-year olds really going with it. By the second count, they were already shouting my magic word, and on the third time it was deafening!
So simple, yet so very effective. This one's a keeper, thanks for another fantastic offering, Bill! Potty |

I don't do stage but have been after a close up version of this effect. I'm afraid the sleight of hand version I tried didn't work for me, the b****e count at close range was too impractical.
Can someone tell me the difference between the poker size one & the cheap 6 card repeat I see for sale? Don't mind paying extra for quality poker size cards but if they're the same as the 6 card gaffs & I'm only paying extra for the jumbo's I'd quite like to know. |

Your really paying for the script here so you will not find anything new in the cards.

Thanks Marky. In that case I'll go for the cheap set as I don't need the Jumbo's or the script, although I'm sure it's excellent.
