Question to folks doing Snowstorm in China. I use the fan that you can get from Michael P. Lair or Mondo Magic. Have any of you had problems with the tine of the fan breaking or the rivet holding the fan together coming apart?
Have any of you found other sources for asian fans that will hold up for stage usage? |

Dave,
I have another guy here at the convention that has them. I will check them out for you tomorrow. Richard

As with anything else we as magicians use, attention to detail and the ability to override the mind's desire to do what has always been done does wonders for truly defining a character that makes sense. Back when I was using the snowstorm, I was buying inexpensive bamboo and paper fans; a few at a time. They were cheap enough that if I broke one, I junked it and started using a new one. Unless you want to do some fancy fan juggling and need a good quality fan, this is an option.

Yes I do have problem with breaking rivet of the fan. Recently I just got the replacement fan from local gift store, and they are available in many colors black, blue, yellow, red. I just bought some for spare....

Plenty of spare Handheld fans around but always check there tight around the base & nut etc
I have 3 Fans but only have used 1 for a few years now-Great effect I love the Snowstorm! Use it in many corporate shows we do at Hotels etc.. One of the best Snowstorms Ive ever seen not using a hand held fan was at a packed Comedy club here in Auckland & the performer after a Hilarious mime act of comedy & interaction etc For his finale he had a helmet with a large automatic electric fan-huge thing-taped to the helmet & bought a series of running gags together & had a singing rubbish bin each time it was opened-you had to be there!!! -grabbed some paper & finished with the paper dipping into his drink, starting the Fan & a Huge snowstorm covered the crowd!!-It got a standing Ovation as we were laughing so much but the effect as something different for snowstorm was brilliant in its conception!!!! His act has won many awards!! |

Ok, I checked with a dealer at the convention on the fans. Here is the dope.
Almost all the guys are getting their fans from the same source. Yes, the rivets break. Replace them with a small machine screw and nut. Put a drop of super glue on the nut to keep it from loosening. Now for the breaking of the ribs. Buy two fans. Take the two outer most ribs at each end and make them double thickness. Glue two ribs together back to back, so they have double the strength. Now assemble with the machine screws. Hope that helps a bit. Richard

I get mine from Chinese shops - where they sell figurines, tables and the like. They come in all colors and sizes - some as much as $200.
My fan is about $25, wide and has lasted over 10 years.

I too have used the standard fan I get my own for a source but I h ave discovered the problem is not so much the fan but How you hold it. when I first started performing the effect I broke a fan almost every other month. I really liked the fan as you can do a cool flip with it (did not like the dragon so got rid of that)
so I worked on it and by changing my grip I solved the problem. the fan I am currently using has seen almost 1000 shows. so the lesson here is change your grip. you need to hold the bottom a bit tighter and more of the bottom of the fan needs to be in your hand. also it is not so much a waving back and forth to make the snow go up it is more of a snap one direction kind of move. hard to explain but I can tell you that after 3000 performances of the snow storm if you do this it will solve your problem. of course it is plastic and anything can happen but work on it and good luck. on a side note what kind of snow do you use? sam

Sam,
I have been using Larry Maples and Mondo Magic snowstorms for years and love them. Recently, I have been using Seo Magic's loads and have noticed they are very well made so I am know sold on those. As a side note, I absolutly hate the ones from India. They are loaded so tightly it takes a lot of pressure to break the load so you start the snowstorm. |

I too used the larry maples snow and they are very good BUT no comparison to Seo magic storms.
I agree the ones from india are awful however I do occasionally buy the multi colored ones and then break them up and use as confetti in other props like when I produce a silk or something like that. good luck with it and if you have any questions about hte snowstorm feel free to ask Ihave bee performing it for over a decade and perform it at least 20 times a month so I have a little experience with it:) sam

In addition to the cheap (and not so cheap) Chinese fans you might try using a Japanese Dancing Fan. The Dancing Fan tends to have fewer ribs than the Chinese Fans and the ribs themselves are of thicker and stronger bamboo.
Opening a Japanese fan is more difficult initially, because it is rather stiff and the material between the ribs is stiff paper that lasts for years. I've never had the rivet break on the japanese fans I've used , but Richard is correct in replacing the rivet with a small machine screw and after putting the nut inplace, seal the end with epoxy or crazy glue. BTW- One can make a tremendous gust of wind with the Japanese fan given it's overall smaller size. I've used both and prefer the japanese fan.

The method I have is the Kovari version. The little platic rivet that holds the egg to the fan broke long ago and I haven't got round to fixing and cannot find the suitable materials to do so.

Go to a martial arts store and buy a war fan.
https://www.themartialartsstore.com/Cata......_Count=2 These have steel ribs, open easily with one hand (they make a great snapping sound as they do) and generate a huge amount of breeze.

Does anyone know the quality of the fan that comes with Andy Amyx snow storm effect? I have looked at purchasing the effect but can't find a review.
