I have a slightly different perspective from some of the early posters. Those who always insist on payment in advance, and begin packing away their gear if that doesn't happen, can appear very greedy and nasty.
A bouncy castle operator in my area had such a policy. He arrived at one house and the father was working. The mother had gone down to the shops. So he told the birthday child that he wouldn't let him have the castle. The mother arrived back a few minutes later to find her tearful child counting out all the money from his piggy bank to pay the greedy prick. The father hit the roof, and insisted the castle be removed. He got a castle from a more reputable supplier, and spread the word. Within weeks everyone knew about the greed of the first guy, and his business suffered substantially. He is no longer in the bouncy castle business. If you want a reputation as a greedy money grabber, fine. I prefer to handle things more discreetly. I love to be paid in advance, but am quite happy to be paid after the event. Compare yourself to a plumber - would you pay the plumber before he had finished the job? Of course not. Very occasionally someone will be slow to pay. If there was no complaint and no issues about the show, I will begin by going after them gently - phone calls and reminders. After a reasonable period those phone calls become daily. If it becomes obvious that these daily reminders will achieve no results, my solicitor fires off a letter. Only once has this not worked. On that one occasion I sued through the small claims court, and won my money. Everyone pays in the end, but I like to give them a chance rather than getting antsy from the beginning.

Send a letter to their boss. Everyone has a boss. E-mail.
Send it to the president, the king, the first minister, send it to all of them, ask them if it is their policy to rely on diplomatic immunity to avoid paying minor bills. Send a copy of the press release you intend to send out soon and to the paper you will send it to. be sure the embassy gets a copy, and they see all the names on the list of the email addresses. Admittedly, this is the more forceful path, and not always the best, you're going to kill a market, and nail a door shut. Also, send them an email saying that you represent a prince, who has been ousted, and you want to have them accept 12 million dollars and hang onto it until he can get back into power, their rewards will be in the millions and they will ahve the gratitude of a king (Dad's sick) have them send you their bank account number.

I get a deposit of 50% if it's feasible, in full if there's reason to believe it will be a slow pay.
In my area, performers get little respect unless they require a deposit for most private gigs. Whoever gets the deposit to me first, for a certain time slot, gets the show. One prospect lost her show on Sunday, after dragging her feet on the deposit for over 2 weeks, because a client got a deposit to me via Western Union. If they snooze, they lose. It's simply not an option to leave a time slot open, unnecessarily. Why deprive a motivated client? |

I require the 50% non-refundable deposit as well to secure the date, and I give a 10% discount for advance payment in full.
