I just watched Jason Randal's routine on Letterman. There's no reason to move that fast. His presentation hints at the method. David's guess regarding magnetic jewels is very reasonable for a laymen. If Jason had let him feel the first one, it would have nipped that theory in the bud. Instead, his proof late in the routine was weak. All that work going on by his left coat pocket was sloppy and un-magical. But I guess magic isn't his goal, as he tells Dave that the gems don't come off and it's all slight of hand.

My routine is the Bizzaro World version of his. And my sticks are cooler. Smile

Not that great!

:) Ha Ha.

Are there different colored gems involved?

Maybe Jason Randal was a little nervous in front of David Lettermen?

Could be. But it was poorly routined. IMHO

Well, those are just gorgeous! Is the ebony waxed or something, or does it look that shiny on its own? They're amazing!

It is coated with some kind of varnish.

They're great looking props, Josh & lovely contrast between the black rods and the sparkly gems (the multi-coloured ones often look a bit cheap). It will look as though you're squeezing diamonds from a block of coal or rock.
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three. Elayne Boosler

I performed with them a lot this weekend. The weather was mild, so I didn't do a sweaty hand test. But they worked beautifully.

Working in front of Leterman would make any magician a little nervous, unless your David Roth.

You win for "Funniest Post Title 2009" in my opinion (at least so far, for 2009).

Also, nice props!

Looking at them, I assume you do some kind of "hot rod" finale with them? Actually this is a great idea (but I think you go one more phase if you have a "final load", correct?)

I've been nervous before. Sometimes my hands shake. Sometimes I lose my train of thought. Sometimes I leave something out. Nerves have never caused me to perform a crappy routine.

Haven't seen this Letterman episode. Maybe it will be on You Tube and I can see this crappy routine for myself.

I believe Ken Allen made the first Jumping Gems, but the effect goes back, at least, to R.M. Jamison's "Jamison's Spot Sticks" on pg. 170 of J.G. Thompson 's "MY Best".

Thanks for the clip Jordan. Not the greatest Jumping Gems routine, that's for sure. But I always get a kick out of the way Mr. Randall comes across.

Very cool looking sticks Josh! I wish you would have shown me your routine when we met in March! Come to think of it I only recall you doing a continuous coffee vanish all week! Smile

The byplay/talk with D.L. was as good as it gets. Great way to do the haunted deck.
