Hi.
Can anyone give me some info on the prices of taxis between McCarran Airport and The Strip in Las Vegas. To be exact this year's Magic Live is being held at the South Point Casino & Resort. I found this site. Is it accurate at all? http://taxi.state.nv.us/FaresFees.htm

No matter what is posted, Taxi fares can vary in Las Vegas depending on what route the driver chooses to take. However, I'm pretty sure the casino offers a free shuttle service from the airport. You might want to check into that.

Its a straight shot from the airport to the casino. Call the hotel and they should be able to give you an idea and also give you info about any hotel van service. Btw Southpoint is a far cry from the 'main' strip, just FYI.

I don't think you can walk to the South Point from the airport, and even if you could, I don't think you would want to. This is Las Vegas, in August!
As Lynetta said, check into the free shuttle. There is a schedule on the South Point website. |

LOL. No I meant walking time from the south point hotel to the Main Strip.
Hehe! My fault.

I'm pretty sure that SouthPoint also has a free shuttle that will run you to the strip and back. You actually think you'll have enough free time to visit the strip??? This must be your first Magic Live, because you'll find you'll never leave the hotel! |

It is my first time at Magic Live, but not the first time in a convention. I have been to 2 FISMs so far.
I thought I would visit the Strip before or after the convention, since it is not worth it for me to come to Las Vegas from Malta just to attend the convention.

I won't be at Magic Live, but I was at the 2nd and go to WMS every year. If it's your first time to Vegas you should plan at least one extra day to explore the strip, see shows and shop.

Two years ago I took a cab from the Orleans to the airport and it was $20. Probably won't be too far from that.

Thanks everyone for all the help.
And what else is there to see in Vegas, apart from the shows and casinos? And anybody else attending for the first time?

Go online and look for vegas guides, there are a bajillion of them.
As far as magic, I wouldn't visit vegas without catching Penn & Teller and Mac King for starters. There are some other bigger acts but stage magic has never been my favorite, but these two shows really deliver. Fountains, Shops, shows and everything else can be found online, many good guides. Google map your drive first and direct the driver to take the direct path, or else they will take you via the highway so you get a "view of the strip" and a much larger fare. You don't need to take the highway to get between the strip and the airport... Best advice I can give is unless you see something that you absolutely *MUST* see, don't make any plans. The convention will be busy enough, and you can probably find some friends hanging out before or after the convention and find things to do with them. If you make plans be willing to ditch them or you'll miss out on some of the best experiences vegas has to offer to a magician. There will be plenty of people at the convention very familiar with or living in Vegas, your best bet is to wait until you arrive at the convention and ask around there, because even the Café members that visit regularly are going to miss many of the recent changes in this fast moving town. |

Mac King is a must.
And for non-magic features, I wouldn't miss Sigfreid and Roy's Secret Garden if you like zoos. |

I've always enjoyed the dinner show at the Excalibur and highly recommend it. If you have a chance, go see Lance Burton's show or Mac King's.

From past experience last time, I would not plan anything for the duration of MagicLIVE... There is too much going on to "sneak away to the strip" for a show. Even during the non-scheduled times at the conference, there are awesome oportunities to meet and talk with your favorite magicians. I was amazed to see top notch magicians sitting at a table in the lobby sessioning with 20-30 people watching. Seriously, there is not even enough time to sleep at this conference. It is awesome, so don't leave for any reason!!! (I am carb loading for the week before so I don't even have to leave to eat!)
With that said, come down a couple of days early or stay a couple of days after and catch all that Vegas has to offer. Personal faves are Mac King (along with everyone else who has suggested a show...) and Penn and Teller. There are also tons of other great magic and non-magic shows. There is a great opportunity on the strip called the half-price ticket booth... AS the name indictes they sell half price tickets on the day of the show for a myriad of Vegas shows... There are a few locations along the strip. One is by the huge Coke store. I am also hoping to organize a Café Meet-up at the convention so all of us can finally meet and put faces to the names we are so familar with! |
