Thanks Dennis.
My question seems (upon re-reading and reflection) to have a negative tone. I didn't actually mean it that way at all, and was simply seeking information prior to the books release on who was, and who wasn't interviewed for the book. For long time supporters and fans of Doug, who the sources for the book were can make a difference when using that information in further research. I'll be purchasing it regardless. |

To Silverking,
I shall not try to answer the question because while I have some knowledge about it, it's incomplete. However, I will mention that John interviewed about 50 people for the book, and based on the interview with me these were "in depth" interviews. Dennis Loomis

We shipped a big batch of the John Harrison books on Doug Henning to customers yesterday and more are going out tomorrow. They are selling very briskly on Murphys Web Site so many dealers will be carrying them. And, if you're going to MAGIC LIVE, John Harrison will be signing copies at the H & R Booth. (Alas, bookings prevent me from attending this time.)
I consider this to be the "book of the year" and Doug to be the most important magician of the last millenium. If you are at all interested in magic history, you should consider getting a copy for your library. Yes, we have them at a great price at Loomis Magic, but you can also get them from many dealers. But think about picking up a copy somewhere... it's a great read. Dennis Loomis

Silverking,
Apologies, I just saw your post, or else I would have responded sooner. To answer your questions: I did not interview Debbie (Debbie did not want to be interviewed at the time I was writing and, in fact, she declined a complementary copy of the book, as she has Doug fixed in her memory in a way that she does not want disturbed). When I approached Jim Steinmeyer in 2002, he indicated that he might write something about Doug someday and wanted to reserve his recollections in case he did. So who did I interview? To name a few, Doug himself (I conducted a 3-hour interview in 1980 for Hocus Pocus magazine -- the magazine went bust and the interview never ran, but I kept the transcript of the tapes); Jerry Goldstein (Doug's career-long mangager); both of Doug's sisters; Doug Lyons (company manager for Doug Henning Magic, Inc.); Steven Schwartz (Wicked) and Edgar Lansbury (both creators of the Magic Show); Marvin Krauss (the man who "discovered" Doug, was company manger for The Magic Show and a producer of Merlin); Barbara DeAngelis (Doug's first wife); Ivan Retiman (not an in-person interview, but he answered e-mailed questions); Nanci Hammond, Gingi Yee and John Almarez (all long-time assistants of Doug); Dale Soules (Doug's co-star in the Magic Show); B.J. Allen (stage manager for Merlin); David Koyle (producer of The Magic Show Movie); Harry Waterson (associate producer of Doug's TV specials); Walter and Charlene Painter (choreographers of his TV specials and director of his touring shows); John Mills Cockell (Doug's collaborator on the first iteration of Spellbound); Bill Schmeelk (who built many of the illusions for The Magic Show, Doug's first special and Merilin); Nancy Bibler (Doug's longtime gal Friday and chef), Rick Glassey (Doug's animal trainer)and many others. In addition, I amassed a huge file of just about everything ever written about Doug, almost 30 hours of video tape dating back to 1974 and copies of production notes and production files from The Magic Show and Merlin (I'm a lawyer by trade, so I'm a pretty good researcher). Copies of the manuscript were vetted with magicians I respect (including Charlie Reynonlds). The dialogue in the book is recreated from dialogue described in the interviews (i.e., at least one of the parties to a conversation was a direct source). There are 261 endnotes spanning 23 pages. |
