For a terrific place to practice, go the a local Soup Kitchen and "do your stuff." They are a captive audience and willing to provide instant feedback. You also get to listen to their conversation, which is enlightening. The food is often pretty good too!
Many years ago I used to go to parks and perform for any victims unlucky enough to be sitting on bench. Not exactly "strolling magic" but a great way to discover problems with angles, lighting, patter speed, etc.
