I liked it.
I started a thread on here a while ago prompted by a post Rick Maue made in the 'Special Guest' section where he expressed his opinion on this sort of effect. Quote:
In short, they are either a dumb trick, or they are a jackass stunt. You can read the whole thread and Rick's views here. My contention, which I laid out in this thread was, Quote:
if the intrinsic elements [that] these danger effects contain are not merely left to BE the [entire] effect but are instead used as a strong platform on which to build a piece of theatre then I think there might be a very good reason to include them in a program. With my limited Spanish I would say this video falls into the type of performance I was referring to. My only issue with the video clip concerns the Director's editing or vision mixing. His editing of the camera shots allows a person watching the clip to reasonably easily follow where the 'Ninja Ball' is. Maybe with a better understanding of Spanish I would have been paying less attention to this aspect of the performance. However by the time the mixing procedure takes place I think it is obvious, to both the audience in the studio and those watching at home, that the performer is going to be guessing where the 'Ninja Ball' is. Therefore it's not unreasonable to think that some might follow where it actually is. The problem of course is that for anyone noticing this, and consequently knowing where the 'Ninja Ball' is, the tension of, 'is he going to make a mistake this time?' is removed. But that point aside, as I said, I liked it. Neal

Watching performances in other languages really bears out the raw energy a performer can evoke from his audience. Yours is at heart-attack levels! Nice job!

WOW! This is a standard effect and most magicians would know what was going to happen but I was really caught up in the tension. This was very well presented. Well done Joan.

Good Grief, are ALL the women in your country beautiful? What are the odds of getting 5 at once on stage? Well-done Joan!

Hi Balaram, that's a nice point. Thank you for watching the clip!
Seriously, always I enjoy to perform with women. I think women have already incorporated the sixth sense! Really it doesn't matter for me but, the truth is I feel better performing with women. Anyway, I really think it always depends on the character of the person and not their gender. Well, this perhaps is an interesting point to discuss all together... Please, there are not any mentalist women in this forum to post his point of view about it? What do you think about this particular point? In performance, do you prefer women or men? May depend of the particular effect to perform? Depends of the place (private party, on stage, etc)? It doesn't matter for you? Best, Joan Monse |

11 minutes is way to long for a mentalism taped (not live) tv effect. The first smash comes only after 9:30, this is Way Way Way too long. We, as mentalists, like to talk. On TV talking is boring (unless you are super funny Letteman style). Talk less and do more (this is what my director keeps telling me all the time). Try to cut the whole segment down to 6-7 minutes of action.
And I'm sorry but I don't get the point of the Makabishi. It just doesn't look dangerous enough (compared to blades or nails roulette). And the way it is handled by you and the spectator even enhances this notion. At first it looks like something that is dangerous to touch but then everybody touches it and the danger proved to be unreal. You look good and comfortable which is a good thing. Nimrod , Israel |

I agree with you Nimrod.
Yes - the performance needs less talk and more action. However, the tone and feel of the performance is great. The atmosphere created around the Makibishi is a perfect presentation coupled with real danger. Look forward to the next set of video's... ORAL> |

Maybe I need to understand what he says. Anyway I would treat this device with much more care, I'd even use some kind of medical pincers to handle it, to show how this device is dangerous to even touch.

Thanks for your points of view.
Last Thursday evening we was working hard on the routine and we have changed the first part increasing the action but maintaining the feel. I'm so sorry but I know that it's so important to understand what I say on that performance and how I say that words. Also I know that the use of that little beauty (the Scorpion) was "risky" in terms of real danger but I'm agree with Roth about the historical background. That specific performance is a theatrical presentation (piano intro, presentation/talk, participant selection, instructions, "reading", conclusion). I'm a perfectionist and I'm continuously improving my show. But, like a painter artist, someday "you must sell your creation" to show it and, if it's possible, make benefits on it. Thank you for criticize me. I've learned a lot from all of you! Best, Joan Monse |

The presentation was very well done. I do not speak Spanish but I was caught up in the building tension so the language barrier was minimal.
Most performers that I've seen use only one audience member and this performance took it to another level entirely. It was entertaining to the point that I didn't care that I knew the method. Mental theatre!!!! Great stuff!! |

Hi all,
Thanks to your opinions and help, (A LOT PM and emails received!!) I think we have improved "The Makibishi Effect" routine for future tv performances. We have "constructed" two versions: a short one for (live) tv and another for theatre/stage performances. Now I'm happy because, we have included more action and previous "game" in the first part of the routine and it's great to feel the people reactions. I enjoy it! Also, we improved some "technical issues" and now it's more easy and quicker the Makibishi (Scorpion) detection. On stage, I'm working with a screen projection and this "magnifies" the Makibishi. Pure psychology... "Sometimes the little things are the most powerful". I think it's NOT only the "real time" duration of the routine. Also, is important the "tempo" of the routine, and in mentalism, of course all of you know that, the charisma/showmanship/personality of the performer can determinate the success, or not... You know that, TV tempo performance is different to theatre/stage performance and I'm working so hard every day on this. I love the (Scorpion) Makibishi and if you own it, love it or, perhaps, don't know this little beauty, you can follow the Scorpion thread on this forum. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......start=90 Thanks A LOT to all of you!! (and please, excuse my bad english!) Best wishes, Joan Monse http://www.vimeo.com/4418799 |
