I just returned from banjo camp. I didn't see any of you there, so perhaps you don't know anything about it.
(You could look here, I suppose: http://www.banjoree.com ) Now I'm back, and fired up about the banjo and ready to give up magic. I can't do a dammed magic trick for the life of me anyway. No point in this post, actually. Unless some of you have ever been to a banjo camp. If so, tell us about it. |

IF you give up magic, stay here. I hear the banjo forums are really boring

The banjo forums are ridiculous. 20 page threads about the best metal composition of the screws that hold the tuners in place. Funny, though: you run into Bill Palmer as a kind of banjo guru. Bill gets around.

And this one time
at banjo camp I took my banjo... I am sure you've heard that before but I couldn't resist.

Stone,
What type of banjo style do you play? Tenor or 5-string? I'm one of the few people in the U.S. who make a living playing old-time style (clawhammer/frailing). Best, Mick PS: You are dead on about those banjo forums.

Mick, that's wonderful that you actually play old-time for a living.
I play five sring, and I clawhammer. I'm not particularly good at it, but I get by. However, I totally suck at my attempts at Scruggs style, so one of the things I had hoped to learn this year was...uh...why I suck so totally. So I approached the guy whose playing I admired the most and bought him a beer and he told me to go get my banjo, and he got his and gave me a free lesson. Basically, he told me that I totally suck. My arm positioning was wrong, my hand positioning was wrong, my finger positioning was wrong, and the result that my fingers were flopping around like fish on the deck of a trawler. In fact, I played three-finger style like...a frailer. So I bought him another beer and we laughed and told jokes until 3:00 AM. The coolest thing about Banjoree is that it is still very young, and there were only 40 or 50 people last time (2007) and 80 this time. So it's very intimate, and you really have an opportunity to get to know people. I must have spent three or four hours talking to Clarke Buehling. Of course, Clarke wasn't Becky. Otherwise such a lot of conversation might have led to a test of...ah...uh...something. |
